If thou art in a grievous mood,
Seek out some sylvan solitude,
Tell all thy hearted woes and ills
Unto the sympathetic hills,
Or to the sea and hear her voice
Bidding thee conquer and rejoice;
The mountain, valley and the glen
Will lead thee to thyself again,
Will soothe thy sorrow, right thy wrong
And kiss thy lips to sweetest song.

The Oconee Swamps Will Fall Into
The Hands of Wood Workers.
The enterorise of our fellow citizen,
Millard Wagnon, in putting a steam
boat on the Oconee river will bring to
the hands of the manufacturer the
rich treasures of the Oconee virgin
forests that line the banks ot this river.
The swamps of the Oconee which
abound ir. splendid hard-wood timber,
have been made accessible by the “In
dustrial Girl.”
The Macon Cooperage Company has
purchased about 1,000 acres of swamp
land, lying about twenty miles below
this city, ar.d will erect mills for get
ting out staves and other material for
their ’barrel factory in the Central
City.
This company will place about
thirty hands in swamp3 hitherto un
touched by the woodman’s axe. This
material will be brought to this city
by our steamboat and shipped to Ma
con.
An engine, stave mill and all the
machinery necessary for successfully
prosecuting the great work in hand ar
rived in this city last Thursday. This
machinery was loaded on the “Indus
trial Girl” Saturday, and yesterday
the proud little steamer started
down the river with its pioneer cargo
in the development of a great industry.
The entering wedge of an enter
prising firm will, we trust, show the
Carakers, W. A. Walker, Sam Ennis
or some other enterprising man in
Miiledgevilie the way to establish a
great industry in this city, and utilize
material that lies so inviting at our
doorS. There is enough timber for
many factories.
The Oconee swamps contain a wealth
of timber that invites manufacture.
Who will touch the button and start
the machinery to buzzing in Miiledge
vilie?

Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting.
Rev. W. R. Branham, pastor ot the
Methodist church,at the weekly prayer
meeting called the attention of his
congregation to the lltli verse of the
27th Psalm : “Teach me thy way, oh
Lord and lead me in a plain path be
cause of my enemies,” (observers in
the marginal reading.) He stated that
the attitude of the Psalmist was one of
submission and prayerfulness. That
the prayer was inspired by the spirit
—hence it was one that be could and
would answer. He leads us by His
word through his spirit, hence the im
portance of taking God’s word as the
“man of our counsel.” God’s word
and God’s spirit never contradict each
other. His word is his articulate will
—He never has two wills concerning
the same thing, consequently the lead
ing of his spirit and the teaching ot
his written word always harmonize:
He called attention to the fact that
the Christian is watched and criticised
by the world, lienee the prayer, “Lead
me in a plain path because of mine
enemies.” The world watches the
Christian with the cold, malignant eye
of hate—rejoicing not in his steadfast
ness, but in his stumbling—not in his
fidelity, but in his failures. Every
recent convert to God should especially
pray,“Lead mein a plain path because
of my enemies”, who would hinder and
not help me—who are even now saying
he will go back to the world in a short
time.

Spanish Prisoners at Manilla.
The condition ot the Spanish pris-
oners at Manilla is beginning to excite
anxiety among the military officers
there. Eleven thousand of these pris
oners are quartered in churches and
other public buildings within the nar-
row confines of the walled city, where
most of the Spanish people also live,
where the American garrison is neces-
satily quartered, and where General
Otis bps located the army headquarters.
Members of the sanitary corps are
kept constantly at work cleaning out
filth that accumulates, the Spaniards
having not the least knowledge of the
laws of sanitation. The result is a con
dition threatening a general outbreak
of some sympotic diseases at any mo
ment. Typhoid fever is already in
creasing at an alarming rate.
Authorities feel it is absolutely es
sential to the health of the city to get
the Spanish prisoners out ot Manilla
at the earliest possible date,
Similar conditions are reported from
Cavite, where the Spanish, in the
bands of the rebels, are suffering from
the lack of the necessaries of life.
JUDQE HANShLL;
It lias been the good fortune ot
Judge Augustus H. Hansell, we should
say the good fortune of his circuit, that
be has served as a superior court judge
longer than any other man in Georgia
ever did.
His record as a judge has been above
reproach in every way. He has a
large and accurate knowledge ot the
law, 0n the bench he is uniformly
and invariably courteous, but firm, as
becomes a judge. His rulings have
stood the test of the appellate court
remarkably well and he lias attended
to the business of his office in an ad
mirable manner. Though lie is the
veteran judge of Georgia he is still
vigorous and fully equal to all require
ments of the position he has filled so
long and so ably.
The constitutional amendment mak
ing the superior court judges elective
by the people has not been adopted,
but it surely will be at the October elec
tion. If it were now in force there
would be no question about the re-elec
tion of Judge Hansell. He will go be
fore the legislature at its approaching
session, however, and that body will
probably elect him lor another term.
The long, faithful and able service
which Judge Hansell has given the
state entitles him to a consideration
which lie will hardly fail to receive.—
