When a voting man asks a father for his
is a wise one. he thinks of one thing equal
ly as important as the young mail's morals,
social and business standing and intelli
gence. A young man who suffers from ill-
health has no right to marry until his health
is restored. To do so is to commit a crime
against the human race. While all disease*
may not be directly inherited, the constitu
tional tendency to aco.uire them is inher
ited. If a man is a consumptive, the
chances are that his children will have
weak, undersized lungs, and a predisposi
tion to acquire the same disease.
The young man who suffers from bron
chitis, weak lungs, spitting of blood or any
disease of the air-passages which, if neg
lected leads up to consumption, may take
Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery with
almost absolute assurance of recovery. It
cures qS per cent, of all cases when taken
in time. It aoothas and heals the delicate
and sensitive tissues of the air passages and
longs, cheeks the cough, facilitates expect
oration, drives out all impurities and dis
ease germs from the tainted blood and
builds new and healthy tissues.
Mr John G Born, of 4020 Liberty’ Ave . Pitts
burgh, Pa., writes " Some thirty months ago I
sain to my wife. • I don't want to keep anything
from you I must tell you I am in the last stage
of consumption.' In December I 1 commenced
taking Dr Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery.
I could then only speak in whispers I have
taken Ihirteen bottles, and can say with truth I
an greatly benefited People are surprised to
bear me speak. 1 can hnlloo, and my voice has
not been as in eight years. Mv stomach
was never in better condition. Formerly I could
not eat without suffering very much immediately
after, but now 1 can eat anything."
COTTON.
TROUBLE IN COFFEE COUNTY.
The burning down of the court
house in Coffee county is the climax to
a series of political happenings there
which make the ('resent situation in
the county decidedly unique. All the
Diets in the case are to he submitted to
Attorney General Terrell lor his con
sideration and later tire almost certain
to be turned over to the legislature in
the form of a contest for a seat in the
lower house. At present there is no
exact information on which one—at
this distance, at least—can form any
reasonably correct opinion as (o whether
proyidenee or politics is at fault, but
New York. Wednesday, Oof. 12, 1898.
Union Recorder:—The demand
for cotton around dd continues in Eu
rope in a sufficiently large volume to
prevent any decline below that basis,
despite the enormous receipts which
are daily coming into sight at the
American ports. There is a disposition
nmeng planters to go slow about sell
ing cotton below 4 1-2 cents in Hie In
terior, which present prices really
mean to the producer. They consider
that, it is impossible for them to pay
their commission merchants the ad
vances which they have made on this
basis and are therefore not eager to
market their crop though this view
which is generally held in America
does not seem to be borne out by the
large movement of coiton through the
Interior towns. Some assume that
this movement is swelled by the cot
ton which was held hack from last sea
son’s crop, but the trade is so demoral
ised over^the fact that it has to handle
two large crops in succession, that it
completely at sea over the movement
which, under ordinary condition
should be interrupted by the low prices
and the quarantines which are in ex
ist er.ee throughout the Mississippi
Valh-y.
No active speculation on the. bull
side has as yet appeared in the market
hut abroad there appears to be u steady
investment demand based upon the idea
ot following the market down to a
lower level. This demand together
w ith ihe buying by spinners is sufficient
to absorb the offerings at tbe present
time and then* are really no weak
spots to be detected in tbe market
though it is a subject ot constant com
ment, that never has the trade known
•such a pessimistic fee'ing as exists at
tr.e present time. The American
speculative demand which was so
marked a feature last season has en
tirely disappeared and will hardly be
lempted to enter the notion market
again unless some positive factor »p-|
pears. Last year, the fact that cotton
during the month ot August had soldi
at eight cents, made the price 0 15-41
cents dining November and December]
atom very reasonable, but this season j
with August having sold at t>.(50, the
M-iiing ot J unitary at A..‘ID under the I
♦ fleet of a large crop, does not make
tbai price appear low to those inves-j
•o s who urn tiMiaily attracted to coiton
on a low basis of values. Therefore
the number of people who have a la-,
vorable opinion of cotton at the pres
ent time is very limited, hut it is cer-j
ta:i. that the attention of the outside j
world has been attracted to the staple
by reason of its low price, and on any
farther decline we may expect to teel
U.e effect ot continued investment buy
ing. which will in all probability make
hiiy further material break in prices
'Exceedingly slow until such time as it
can be absolutely determined whether
Ihe crop lias been curtailed bv frost or
Whether the yield will exceed the esti-
'my.te now current.

it is interesting to recite the numerous
incidents, tragic and otherwise, which
have led up to the present remarkable
entanglement. It is a political puzzle
worthy of Pennsylvania and one which
even a Philadelphia lawyer would not
undertake to solve offhanded.
The present representative from Cof
fee county is the Hon. Daniel Lott,
who is six feet tall and every inch a
populist. But the democrats named a
strong man to succeed him and an ag-
gressiye tight was made tor the entire
democratic ticket, Col. Candler and
Senator Steve Clay going to Douglas,
in the county, to close the campaign.
The election was an exciting one, and
when the returns came in,late on Wed
nesday night, to be consolidated, it was
found that the McDowell’s mill pre
cinct could not be taken into consider
ation, because the election officers there
had failed to send in with theiq count
tbe list of registered voters. Coflee
has been a populist stronghold ever
since populism was born, and in 189G
it went republican by a majority of
285. This time the democrats carried
the county by thirty votes, not count-
the McDowell’s mills district,
which gave a populist majority of forty-
five.
The county offices are all in con-
trol of the third party men and when
the populists were confronted with the
fact that McDowell’s mill precinct
would have to be thrown out and thus
elect the entire democratic ticket, they
cast about for an excuse to throw out
the pickren district, which is largely
democratic, and they found that tl •
storm had blown a large tree down on
the voting place there and demolished
it, so that no election could be held. It
was raining when the managers met
and they adjourned to the nearest
house and there held the election. 1 he
populists claim that it was illegal. So
instead of consolidating the vote, they
sealed up the returns from the entire
county, deposited them in a sate in the
clerk’s office and referred the whole
matter to the attorney general of the
state and adjourned until next ^ ednes-
day, when it was decided to meet and
declare the result.
But on Friday somebody set lire to
the courthouse and burned up the build
ing, records, votes and all. I lie demo
crats say tbe populist did it. I lie pop
ulist deny the charge. In a day or two
the whole matter will he dumped upon
Attorney General Terrell, with such
evidence as to the various catastrophes
as botli sides find available. An appeal
from bis decision is certain, and then
the case will be transferred to the
house.
Who wins?

ical editor of The Constitution will give
his opinion of a law which permits
cyclones and matches to enter Coffee
county without proper knowledge of the

Woman’s Mysterious Ills.
Explanation of their nature by Dr. Hartman, who tells how to cure them.
women are constantly puz
zled about their health. In
deed female troubles puzzle all
women. Older women have
experience, but few possess
knowledge of the subject. The
periodical suffering is painful.
It is accompanied by many
varying.sensations that distress,
llow much of this is necessary
is a matter of guesswork. The
whole question is shrouded in
professional mystery.
Hartman's book for women,
1 " Health and Beauty,’’ treats
matters with delicacy, and at
the same time with clearness. Write
to the Pe-ru-na Medicine Company, Columbus, ()., for it: it is mailed free. It
is a practical printed talk to women. Hr. Hartman defines women's diseusesas
catarrh and tells hoiv Pe-ru-na cures them.
Mrs. C. C. Naeve, 3SG Morrison St.. Portland, Ore., writes as follows:
Pe-ru-na Medicine Co., Columbus. O.
Dear Silts:—"I began to take l'e-ru-na when I lived in Columbus. 0,.in 1887,
and have used it ami the Man-a-lin ever since whenever I needed medicine. I
have never found an equal to Pe-ru-na for regulating the menses, and before 1
began to take it 1 was never regular and always had more or less pain. I had
tried many different medicines before 1 saw Pe-ru-na but without success.”
There is nothing mysterious about the action of Pe-ru-na. It is not a
“cure-all." but it cures catarrh wherever located, and there may be catarrh in
any organ of the body, as all are lined with mucous membrane.
Mrs. M. C. Mehl, fi04 Walnut St.. Columbia, Pa., says: ” I have been troubled
with catarrh end a soreness in my bowels for several years. I tried everything
that was recommended. I tried Pe-ru-na and ain happy to say that I am now
entirely well.”
Hr. Hartman's advice may be had without charge by any woman who will
write for it. His book on Chronie Catarrh is also mailed free. It explains the
danger of lottil treatment. AH druggists sell Pe-ru-na.

A bicycle rider in New York lias
been fined for not having his hands on
the handle bars while riding through
the city. His offense was defined as
“reckless riding.” To one who loves
to put on airs it is no doubt very grati
fying to ride hand-ort through the
crowd, but it is anything but pleasant
to other riders nnd pedestrians. The
reckless rider not only risks his own
limbs, but also the limbs and, perhaps,
the lives of others. It a person really
