MR. PRESTON BROOKS CONTESTS
For Rhodos' Scholarship, in Oxford Uni*
versify, England.
Mr. Robert Preston Brooks, of this
city, was one of the contestants for
Georgia’s representative on the Rhodes’
scholarship at Oxford University, Eng
land.
The examination was held on the
campus of the University, at Athens
last Thursday. Besides Mr. Brooks,
who represented the State University,
Mr. Thomas Henry Wade, of Columbus,
from Emory College, was a contestant
for the scholarship.
The committee for Georgia, namely
Chancellor Walter B. Hill, and Profes
sor W. H. Bocock, of the University' of
Georgia; Professor W. L. Weber, of
Emory College, and Professor W. H.
Kilpatrick, of Mercer University, have
decided that the scholarships shall he
awarded in Georgia to the different col
leges in the order of the dates of the
several charters. The University of
Georgia, having the oldest charter, will
therefore get the first scholarship. In
the event that no one from the Univer
sity of Georgia passes the papers, the
first scholarship will be awarded to Em
ory College, as having the next oldest
charter.
Both Mr Brooks and Mr. Wade will
no doubt, pass the examination and in
that event the scholarship will he award
ed to the former, and the scholarship for
next year will be awardtd to Emory col
lege.
The scholarship has an annual value
of $1,500, and is good for three years.
Mr. Brooks is the second son of Mrs.
Anna Brooks, of this city, and has many
friends here, who will hear of Ids suc
cess witli pleasure.
