Washington, April 27, 1904.
w eek there were two uotable ex
pressions giving the cue to the two par
ties for the campaign, one by the Dem
oeratic leader, John Sharp Williams,
and tlie other by the bouncing and some
what grandiloquent orator, Senator
Uolliver, of Iowa. The gist of Dolli-
vor's speech was that Trusts may be
trusted; that there are good trusts and
had trusts; that the beneficent trusts
produce prosperity and that naughty
trusts die of their own wickedness like
angry scorpions. He gave a list of
trusts, which he declared, had gone
bankrupt merely because they tried to
defraud the people. The corollary j,of
these conclusions was that trusts could
not possibly be an issue in the approach
ing campaign. At this the Republicans
applauded hysterically, and the Demo
crats laughed tumultuously. Several
clerks will he employed for the next six
months to furnish to voters the Smoot
Dolliver conclusions. Of course the
trusts will directly or indirectly pay the
scribes.
Mr. 'Williams, the leader of the House
Democrats, charged the Republicans
with shirking and not daring to face
the real issues of the campaign. This,
he declared, accounted for tlicir run
ning home so early. They cannot face
•m investigation of the obvious abuses
and corruption in the departments, exe
cutive usurpation of legislative func
tions, violations of the Constitution,
and failure to pass neceisary laws unless
those investigations are made by the of
fenders themselves. He asked why the
•conspirators were not punished who
had been declared by the Supreme
■Court- to be guilty of combining in the
Northern Securities case; why the
anthracite coal trust had not beonprose-
• lift'd, the coal-carrying railways com-
p ‘lied to reform their methods, and the
frauds in the Post Office Department]
and Interior Department relentlessly i
"xposed, For the first time, lie said,]
tlie President had been indulging in :
the practice of making laws by liis otti- |
cial decree; and tire people have become ]
a jcustomed to his habit of executing
only such laws as lie considers wise. Mr.
Williams appealed for reciprocity with |
Canada, the putting of soft coal, hides, i
anil other commodities on the free list,
and for the Filipinos a free press, free
speech, and commerce with the United
States by any vessels they may choose
to employ. He said the air was full of
issues for the campaign which he be
lieved would retire the Republican par
ty from the confidence of tlie people
unit from its position of trust next No
vember.
The Democrats of the Judiciary Com-
inirtie of the House turned a neat trick
on Wednesday to the discomfiture of
the Republicans. A majority of the
Republicans were absent and all the
Democrats were present; whereupon
the Democrats instantly called up, ap
proved of and ordered reported to the
House two important resolutions intro
duced by Loader Williams. One asked
the administration why it hadnotprose-
cuteil the coal trust and the other in
quire 1 why criminal action hail not
b i n taken against the Northern Securi
ties conspirators As these resolutions
bad been referred to the committee as
to a graveyard, and it was never intend

HEALTH
There is no one who does not need a
Liver Medicine occasionally.
The symptoms of Liver Complaint are
well known to every one, such as consti
pation, dyspepsia, loss of appetite, sleep
lessness, headache, a tired feeling and
many others of a similar nature.
Thousands die annually by not heeding
the warnings of nature.
Many acquire some chronic disease
from which they never recover.
Many of these could be spared for years
of usefulness, by keeping in the home
some reliable remedy.
We believe that we can convince any
fair-minded person that there is no bet
ter remedy for the Liver known, than
Dr. Thacher’s Liver and Blood Syrup.
The formula is known, consisting of:
Btichu, Hydrangea, Mandrake, Yellow
Dock, Dandelion, Sarsaparilla, Gentian,
Senna and Iodide of Potassium. You
know just what you are taking. How
many other formulas of a liver medicine
are published ? Ask your druggist about
this. It is already prepared and can be
taken immediately.
The strength is extracted in the most
skillful manner, certainly superior to any
powdered preparation known. (We also
manufacture a Liver Medicine in pow
dered form, with which any druggist can
supply you, but this, like all other dry
Liver Medicines requires preparation.)
Dr. Thacker’s Liver and Blood Syrup
is pleasant to take, does not lose its
strength, ns Liver Medicine in dry form,
and will keep in any climate.
Your doctor, however skillful, could
prescribe nothing better.
There is no opportunity for a doctor
to make a mistake in writing a prescrip
tion, or a drug clerk to make a mistake
in compounding the same, (besides a
doctor's bill and the cost of the medi
cine.) You can be absolutely sure of the
proper proportion being in every dose.
Dr. Thackers Liver anil Blood Syrup
lias been used with the greatest confi
dence and success in thousands of homes
for 62 years, and is prepared by a phar
macist of 25 years’ experience, in a labo
ratory equipped with the most modern
appliances for the most perfect safety.

DO YOU GET UP
WITH A LAME BACK?
Republicans were deeply diagramed
and enraged. They filibustered, but
were voted down and overruled, and
the House was asked to pass the resolu
tions. They are now on the House cal
endar as privileged measures, subject to
be called up at any time. So it is likely
that the Republicans of the House
will be compelled to go on record, either
in adopting these damaging resolutions,
or in defeating them, an alternative
equally unpleasant.

On Wednesday Sara Lippincott died,
aged eighty. She was best known by
her pen-name, “Grace Greenwood.’'
She lias spent the last half of her life in

Moderate Drinking.
The finest city and village Churches
are paiuted with the Longman & Marti
nez Paints, and we want every Church
to accept our donation whenever they
paint.
s & t; make 14, therefore when you
want, fourteen gallons of paint, buy only-
eight of L. & M. and mix six gallons of
pure Linseed Oil with it, making actual
cost of paint about $1.30 per gallon.
Don’t pay $1.60 a gallon for Linseed
Oil (worth 00 cents) which you do when
you buy other paint6 in a can with a
paint label on it.
Many houses aro well painted with
four gallons of L. & M. and three gal
lons of Linseed Oil mixed therewith.

If moderate drinking led to more
moderation, and that to total abstinence,
it would not be dangerous. The trouble
is that it leads to more drinking and in-
temjierauce. Fifty years ago, in France,
the people drank freely of light wines,
using little strong drink. But the
French people have learned a sad lesson.
Tlie wines created a thirst for intoxi
cants, and now strong drink lias a firm
hold on that people. Light wines are
no longer satisfactory; distilled liquor
and drunkenness are the common tiling.
The average consumption of alcohol
is thirty-three pints a year to each in
habitant, twice as much as in any other
country in Europe, except Switzerland;
eight times as much as in Canada. It
is a sad commentary on modern drink
ing, but a very suggestive one.—Herald
and Presbyter.

UTILIZE COTTON STALKS.
Mr. Herbert J. Webber, in charge of
the labratory of plant breeding of the
U. S. Department of Agriculture, Wash
ington, called to see Mr. Sam D. Squires,
superintendent of the Marietta Paper
Mill, last Saturday. He called to learn
of the experiment Mr. Squires is making
in converting cotton stalks into paper.
Mr. Squires has so far converted the
stalks into pulp, preparatory to making
paper. He has not yet demonstrated
the cost of the product, and he and Mr.
Webber will take the matter up and see
what can be done in that line. If suc
cessful, discarded cotton stalks will be
come a source of revenue, if the cost is
not too great.—Marietta Journal.
