COUNTY AND CITY OFFICIAL ORGAN
THE PRESIDENTIAL SITUATION IN
GEORGIA.
The fight for a choice for the Dem
ocratic nomination for president is on
in Georgia, between Hon. Oscar Under
wood, of Alabama, and Gov, Wood-
row Witson, of New Jersey, Head
quarters for each of them have been
established in Atlanta.
The friends of Gov. Wilson claim
that he is the logical candidate, and
should be given Georgia’s vote in the
convention. That lie represents those
A CLEANING UP DAY.
Whi'ii the rain is over, mid the sun
shine brings gladness to the earth,
and the trees and fiowers begin to
bloom. Milledgeville should have a
general cleaning up day. Every cit
izen and property owner should join
u this movement. It will go along
ways towards making our city beau
tiful and healthy.
We should start the summer with
a clean city from north to south and
from east to west.
This could be done if the people of
the city would realize the Importance
of having a clean ami sanitary city.
In many [daces the ladies have or
ganized for this purpose, and have
been a potent factor in accomplish-
ng great results.
Let’s have a. general cleaning up
day!

It Is a fact that the great emperor
of the French had a very poor opinion
of Shakespeare's plays. According to
Thibaudeau, In his "Bonaparte and the
Consulate,” Napoleon said one day:
"Shakespeare was forgotten even by
the English for two hundred years, un
til Voltaire took It Into his head to
write him up, to please his English
friends; and ever since people have
gone about repeating that Shake-

enacted into law. That he stands for
a government in the interest of the peo
ple. That he is a Southerner and once
made his home in Georgia. He is the
strongest man that the Democratic
party could possibly nominate.
The friends of Mr. Underwood say
that it is time for the South to exercise
its rights and nominate a Southern man
lor president, and that Mr. Underwood
stands out preeminently as the man for
whom Georgia should cast its vote.
That as the floor leader of the majority
in the House of Representatives lie has
proven himself n great leader, and a
man of sound judgement. That he
stands out a man among men as the

ever lived. I have read him, and there
is nothing In him that approaches
Corneille or Racine. His plays are
not worth reading. 0
THE GOVERNOR'S RACE.
The Gubernatorial race in Georgia is
assuming shape. Several weeks ago I
Hon. Joe Hill Hall, of Macon, announc
ed that lie would be a candidate. Uu 1
last Saturday Hou. Thos. G. Hudson, |
Commissioner of Agriculture, anuoune- j
ed his candidacy and platform, It is!
reported that Hon. J. M. Slaton, of j
of Atlanta, will announce within the
next few days. A persistent rumor
says that Judge R. B. Russell will again
enter the field.
Ic may be safely predicted that
Georgia will have an interesting cam
paign for Governor this year.
IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE.
The determination of the City j
Council to extend the sewers in the
southern part of the city and on
North Jefferson street is a stop in the
right direction and meets with the
approval of our people.
It is reported that Messrs. L. S.
Fowler and Geo. P. Brantley, who
have recently purchased property on
North Jefferson are planning to erect
modern dwellings. The Georgia rail
road will soon erect a modern depot
and other improvements are prom
ised out that way.
A step that is made to improve any
section of the city is a wise one. We
want to see the city improye rapidly
this year.
