SUGGESTIONS FROM
JAMES.
PARK
Greensboro, Ga., Nov. 10, 1920.
Editor Constitution: In view of the
abnormal times that now confront us,
especially here in middle Georgia,
brougnt about by the climatic con-
ditions^ the ravages of the boll wee
vil ami the price of cotton below the
cost ol production, I desire, in the ut-
nio.- respect to the opinions of others
lo make a few suggestions for the
oenent ot the happiness and prosperi
ty of the people,
November, us we all know, is the
gincial settling month in this section
oi im , L atc, and while 1 believe
-cron in every person paying his
aon . l nts and doing all in his pow
er to a. I'y his creditors, now is the
mie lor the creditors and debtor
classes to have a thorough under-
handing with each other.
'1 ho debtor clas s should use their
best effort: to satisfy those that they
-•ve and creditor class should be as

By allowing them to pay all that
they can and carrying over the bal
ance for another year it will be to the
mutual advantage of the creditors
and debtor . What advantage will t
'> e to sell at force s ales the live stt i k
anil other necessities of life and p i.e
i beyond the power of men to get out
of the slavery of do 1 t if it can be
avoided? Said property at forced
sale will not bring near its market
value and it will leave thousands of
acres of land next year without any
one to cultivate.
The Legion of the Past
I have seen times like these in the
past and my experience has been that
t is much better to adopt the above
ourse than to kill “the hens that lay
he golden eggs.”
That great An erican Thomas Jef
ferson, said that “No nation could
he great unle the tillers of the soil
were prosperous.” I have always ad-
ocatcd that there should be no fric
tion between those who are engaged
in the agricultural, manufacturing^
crcaniilc and banking pursuits.
They are mutually dependent upon
ach other and their interest are so
'ntertvvinod that the success of one is
dependent upon the success of the
other, but under present conditions
everything should be done for the
happiness and prosperity of those en
gaged in tilling the soil. As has been
said by another great American, “if
vou destroy the farms grass will grow
in our streets.
We are promised seed time and
harvest and the present distressing
condition will only be temporary if
proper methods, economy and energy
are practiced in the future. If we
will devote a third of our cultivated
lands to small grain one-third o corn
peas, potatoes and o’-her provision
crops and a part to the raising of live
stock and make cotton in reality the
surplus crop we will see a great chan
ge in the next twelve months for the
i betterment of all the people.
This is the only sensible way to
'arm and we know from experience
that those who follow this plan arq
growing richer each year and also
their lands are growing more fertile.
T am speaking ns a practical farmer,
as 1 am glad to count myself as a
. i ii of this great and noble class
' ' ns in our state. The great
! Governor of the universe never in-
1 1 >r Ihe lands to be planted in
.'.me crops year after year, but
■ y of nature consist in vnrie-
- i against the laws of nature
di\ersify' in our farming oper*
• lire What Ycu Preach.
: here strongly in the doctrine
ell of us should practice what we
' nd 1 am telling the few that
' u d to me vo do the best they
, ■ ul 1 assure them if they will do
'.’..it 1 will be as indulgent to
i I : ■ 1 i‘ as 1 possibly can. Pardon me
i iking this personal allusion, but
i convinced that this is the proper
in ' to pursue and that in the end
w'il redound io the mutual benefit
of : 11 of lis.
This is the period that will prove
tin metal that men are made of and
in accordance with the teaching of
toe Savior of he world when he said:
"Whatsoever ye would that men
should do to you, do even so to them.”
I trust under present environments
, that none of our citizens will prove
| t n be Shylocks and demand the pound
! of flesh.
While the financial clouds that now
| surround us are dark, faith in the
promises of our great Creator coup-
lied with "proper judgment, economy
; anl energy, will dispel them. We
must also remember that behind the
| clouds the sun is still shining and the
only way to conquer trouble is to take
up arms against "hem and keep otir
morale up to the proper point and we
! will not fail.
These suggestions are made in the
utmost sincerity for the good of our
. people and 1 trust some good will flow
I therefrom.
