FARMING IN JAPAN

"Tlie Passing of tin* Fiery Fur

title of a lipttk telling of modern nielli
mis of traveling by sea. with emphasis
on the hunkering ol .-.hips with fuel
ol! Instead of coal, thus elitninating
th.e stoker who, day and night, shov
eled that eon I into the ever-yawning
depths of Hame. Doubtless those trav
elers who imeil to feel sorry for the
stoker's plight will join In tlie pleas
ures of the trip with greater equanimi
ty on tin' oil-burning boats, one of
th? most interesting of recent sights
in the kaleidoscopic harbor of New
York was the bunkering with fuel oil
of the Canard liner Aquitnnia directly
from an oil tanker. In about twenty
hours lo.ddd barrels of oil was stored,
by means of an S'.o-ineli flexible metal
hose, the services of but three men
being required. Had all four connec
tions been used, the hunkering c.mld
have been completed in six hours by
seven men, this ineluding both proc
esses of discharging and receiving.
Thus llii> modern method means a
saving of time, labor and expense,
since the coal bunkering of an ocean
liner usually requires the services of
many men for several days. It is also
Interesting to note that tlie liner's
first run with oil as a fuel resulted
in the consumption of approximately
3,000 tons, as against the usual 5,8-10
tons of coal.—Chri Pan Science Moni

DRIVES 1,150 NAILS AN HOUR
William J. Babin# of Wilmington
Wants to Bs Champion in New
England.
Wilmington. Msss.—Is William .T,
Rahim* of tlds city the champion crate
nailer of New Kngland? This is his
claim and In* justifies It by saying he
can drive 17' 2 nails a minute, or 1,150
nails in an hour, and lias made a rec
ord of 7,302 nails in an eight-hour day.
The nearest approach to the nail-driv
ing championship has been made by
Frank Brown, who lias driven 6,400 six
penny Mails in eight hours, making TOO
crates in which each crate had 64
nail*. This gives him a record of 13
nails a minute.
Babble's crates have 44 nails, but he
also uses six-penny nails.
Artificial Wool.
The artificial wool which has been
under test at Leeds (Lug.) university
is produced from cotton waste, its
basis being cellulose acetate. It is
claimed that the product is an even
bettor insulator against bent and cold

fully. and that it will wear well. In
the experiments made, it has been sat
isfactorily converted Into fabrics.
Equal parts of artificial wool and; nr4 nc IT
natural wool gave a cloth resembling; UnbUfk Iduano
tweed, and the head of the university -
textile department has suggested that
this should he useful for men or wo

wearing qualities constitute the special
appeal of the material. Its defects are
said to include inelasticity and Ha-
