NEEDED
There never was a time in the last
fifty years when the agricultural in
terests of Baldwin county were as
I ally demoralized as they are at this
time. The crop upon which the
farmers have depended as their
money crop is -1 dismal failure, lhere
has rot been much over a third ot a
crop of cotton made in the county
this year and the price is lower than
it has been in several years—much
lower than the price of production.
The boll weevil and weather eondi
tions are responsible for the
crop. The boll weevil will he
next year, and while cotton can be
made under boll weevil conditions it
is a hard unrelenting fight on the
p;irt of the farmer, who undertakes
to cultivate it and make anything of
a crop. The farmers have got to
turn their attention to raising other
crops, and hogs and cattle.
There is much talk just now of
many of the farms in Baldwin county
laying out idle next year, as the far
mer who owns his land, the land lord
and the tenant are disheartened, and
feel that they cannot undertake to
go into the cultivation of a crop for
another year. If there ever was a
time when a spirit of co-operation
between the business men and far
mers was necessary that time is now.
A meeting should be held at an
early date, at which every farmer
and business man of Milledgeville
and Baldwin ounty .-.hould be pres

for next year discussed The far

There are frequently cases here
where an operation is absolutely nec- _
cssary to save life, and if it is per-11
formed the patient must be carried 1
to a hospital or sanitarium where'
they can receive proper attention, j
They must have trained nurses and!
be properly nourished, etc. It fre
quently happens that they are com
pelled to remain in the hospital for
weeks or months. The nurses have
to be paid, and the food bought and
served. The patient is not able to
hear the expense and the owners of
ihe sanitarium are compelled to bear
these expenses.
These expenses mentioned do not
include the operation by the physi
cians.
There should be a charity fund
raised in Milledgeville to aid in de
fraying the expenses of a person
where it is necessary for him to be
carried to the hospital for an opera
tion or treatment if they are not
able to bear them themselves. It is
impossible for those at the head of
the hospital to stand the expense of
paying trained nurses and serving
the food.
The people of Milledgeville have
never failed to respond to a call
to alleviate suffering humanity, and
this suggestion should meet with a
pompt response for there frequently
occur cases where a fund of this
kind may be used to help the suffer
ing and save life.
