GRIST MILL STARTS
OPERATION AT SPARTA
Sparta. Dec. 14.—Sparta and the
territory supplied by it has a new
enterprise in the shape of a grist mill
which commenced operation Thursday
morning under the name of Graves
& Fos er Milling Co. The mil! has
sufficient capacity to fill the require
ment of all persons in this territory.
It has been a number of years since
the town has had such an enterprise,
and its coming has proven of especial
interest to the farmers, who have
been compelled to pay in the neigh
borhood of $2 per bushel for mea
while the price of corn had dropped
below $1 per bushel.
ONE TREE RUUDS A
CHURCH. EXCEPT FLOORS
With the exception of the floors
all the wood entering into the con
struction of a church recently built
at Santa Rosa, Cal., was taken from
one tree—a giant redwood, 18 feet
in diameter. The tree produced 78,-
000 feel, of timber besides many
thousand shingles, but the floor is
made of hardwnod, to last the longer;
The tree grew on a high mountain
range near Greenville, fifteen miles
from the Pacific ocean and when cut
was found to be about 800 years old.
There was enough wood left for an
other church.
NEGRO BOY WHO SHOT
FOUR BOYS SENTENCED
(Sparta Ishmaelitej
1 Emmett Davis, the negro boy who
fired into a wagon in which one white
j boy named Scroggins and three ne-
j gro boys were riding near Devereux
I Saturday afternoon of last week,
: was indicted by the grand jury and
| when tried was convicted and sen-
i tenced to serve a term of six years
at the State Farm for Boys.
Davis, who is only fifteen years of
age, was hunting with his shot gun
ear the public road when the boys
ame by in a wagon and without
ause, it is said, filed into the wagon
and wounded more or less seriously
all of the occupants. At first it was
thought that Scroggins would lose
one of his eyes as a result of being
.-hot but later developments have
shown that his vision has not been
affected. When Davis had fired he
tried to make hi3 escape by entering
a swamp nearby and eluded the posse
that undertook to arrest him.* How
ever, after the indictment had been
returned Sheriff Hightower went out
and arrested him and brought him in
for trial.

Up to Year 1900 the Projections on
Mars Had Been Thought to
Be Mountains.
The first observers of projections on
Murs had attributed them to the same
cause that produces projections on the
moon—that is, mountains. Such ihey
were said to he in France and at Lick.
This view, however, was in 1892 dis
puted by W. 11. Pickering, wlio consid
ered them to be not mountains, hut
clouds. This view was supported by
A. E. Douglass, who observed them in
181)2 at Flagstaff, Ariz. The mountain
theory of their generation was shown
to be untenable and their ascription
to clouds proved 10 be the correct
theory in December. 1900. Only a sin
gle projection was visible in 1900. 1903
and 1905. As a mountain does not
change Its place, and as nothing was
seen where something had been vis
ible. the phenomenon was proved to
not he a mountain peak. Now the only
other tiling capable of catching the
light before it reached the surface
would he something suspended in the
air—that is. a cloud. Deductions,
therefore, from the rarity of the phe
nomenon alone showed that the pro
jections must he clouds. Furthermore,
tlie projection was smaller after the
lapse of 24 hours. The something that
caused it was not only not attached to
the soil, but was moving and dissipat
ing as It. moved along. Clouds are
the only bodies known to us which ac
count for thpse metamorphoses
Clouds, then, and not mountains, are
the explanation of the projections of
Mars.—"Murs nnd Its Canals," by Per
clval Lowell.

Iowa is reported to be the richest
state in the Union per capita. Why?
Because Iowa raises more hogs. Yet
Iowa hasn’t the advantages for hog
raising to compare with any state in
the South. Baldwin county can grow
just as good livestock and a far
greater variety of feed and forage
crops as cheaply or cheaper than can
be produced in the North.
* * *
The hog harvests much of his own
feed, thus eliminating labor.
The hog himself is a soil builder
and he feeds to advantage upon nu
merous legumes that are also soil
builders. A farm well stocked with
live stock seldom shows any lack of
fertility. An acre of land fertilized
in this way will usually produce as
much cotton as two acres which has
not.
* * *
Agriculture cannot be a satisfac
tory business without the production
of live stock in some form. Where
the production of live stock is en
gaged in the business of farming
will be on a more permanent basis,
and more satisfactory all around. It
is only in the following of such a
system that the fertility of the soil
may be maintained and a profit made
from the operation of high priced
land.
