Born at Miiledgeville, Georgia, he
was graduated from G. M. C. and
later was graduated from the Uni
versity of Georgia in 1886. He
tained his doctor’s degree from Johns
Hopkins in 1890 and studied at Ger
man universities. He became a mem
ber of the faculty at the Univeraitj
of Georgia in 1891, and remained
there for eleven years. As Adjunct
Professor of Chemistry, he came in
contact with thousands of students
who held him in high esteem, not only
as s teacher but as a man. Himself
a football and baseball player, be
always took an active interest In all
branches of athletics. When the
University hf Georgia erected a mod
em athletic plant. It was given the
name it bears today, “Herty Field,”
He has served as President of the
American Chemical Society, and has
consistently urged the necessity of
American economic independence in
all branches of industry. He is at
present a director of the American
Chemical Society and President of
the Chemical Warfare Association, as
well as a member and leading spirit
in numerous other technical organi
zations.
