fact is that at Tallulah, La.* where
boll weevil hibernation records have
been kept since 1915, the number of
weevils found per ton of Spanish
rposs thhc winter is 280. This com
pares with 16 per ton of moss in
1924, 229 in 192II. 137 in 1917, 133
1916, and 737 in 1915. Spanish
fs is a favorite hibernating place
the boll weevil. It is therefore
used by the department’s investiga-
rndex of the rate of hi
bernation.
om the foregoing figures it
»tid that, in more or less norma]
i from 130 to 200 weevils r
it about the average number |
into hibernation in the fj
While this year’s rate of hibernat
t Tallulah is much above the nv
ge, it is exceeded by the count
ther points. Thus the average
weevil hibernation for northern Lou
ana is estimated at 330 Jive weevil
•er ton of moss. In southern Louis-
high total of 1,581. For North Car-
•erage is 430. In South
Carolina and Georgia at the points
here counts have been made the
number is lighter, being 52 for South
Carolina and 39 for Georgia.
These figures do not mean that any
uch number of weevils will survive
the winter says the department.
Nevertheless, they give the first in
dex of the number which may be in
existence to start infestation next
pring. Conditions throughout much
of the cotton belt last fall were fair
ly favorable for weevil breeding after
the cotton crop had been made.
North Carolina there was n heavy
second growth, and ideal conditions
iulted for weevil breeding and hi
bernation. In the spring examina-
ill be made to determine the
number of weevils that have survived
?nt observations in
dicate, however, that the fall rec
ords are of extreme importance.
