The preliminary work of paving
the second zone. South Wayne street
has been commenced and drainage
and curbing are being placed.
Assistant Civil Engineer Young
and Supervisor W. I>. West of the
Georgia railroad, were in the city
Monday, looking over the situation
with a view of adjusting the tracks
of the Milledgeville Railway Co.,
which runs down South Wayne to
the puving program. The railway
company will pay for the width of
nine feet of the highway traversed
by the roadbed.
While here Engineer Young and
Supervisor West also looked into the
matter of removing the tracks on
Hancock street, and the construc
tion of a track up McIntosh htreet to
the G. S. C. W. campus.

Bivins went down to Laurens county
Saturday fishing and when they re
turned to the city they hi ought yith
them a Rock fish that weighed six
teen pounds and thirteen ounces.
They were fishing nt the Bernard
Clark reserve in Turkey Creek and
had caught a number of trout anu
perch, when this fish struck the
hook of Mr. Eberhart, and tried :v
run awny with it. Just as it was
landed it escaped from the hook, and
here was Mr. Bivins came in us he
joined in preventing its escape back
into the water.
The fish was one of the largest
of its kind even seen here and at

Messrs. Eberhart and Bivins en-

Cross and her co-workers redubled
their efforts to swell the relief fund
here.
One hundred and six dollars has
been raised to date, many citizens
coming forward at the first appeal.
Over 250,000 people were reported
homeles* and in need of immediate
relief, according to Secretary Hoo
ver, director of the relief work. A
call was issued to all Red Cross
chapters for quick aid.

FLOOD RELIEF INEW DIRECTORS
FUND GROWING
The second quarterly conference
of the Milledgeville Circuit was held
at Pleasant Grove church on Satur
day by Dr. Elam F. Dempsey, pre
siding elder of the Oxford district.
Dr. Dempsey preached at a morn
ing service, which was well attended
by the officials and members of the
churches in the circuit. At the close
of the service a splendid dinner was
served, in spite of a downpour of

Smith made u raid near a negro
church in the north western portion
of the county Sunday afternoon on
a crowd of gamblers, and arrested
fifteen negro men.
Some of those arrested were found
with liquor in their possession, and
one or two with conceuled weapops.
They have with one exception been
released on bond, and will be tried
later.

of Milledgevllle’s most substantial
citizens.
Mr. McKinley is agent of the Geor
gia Railroad in this city, and is a
careful painstaking business man.
Mr. Conn is the youngest son of
the late Capt ft. T. Conn, and is
now mnnnging the wholesale grocery
store of John Conn Co. He is pop
ular with the trade, on account of
his careful business policy.
Dr. Allen is an assistant physician
of Allen’s Invalid Home, and is held
In high esteem as a doctor and man.
The Exchange Bank has a capital
of $.100,000.00, and is conducted on
sound business principles, in the in
terest of the stockholders and pa
trons alike.

Problems relating to the conduct
ing of the affairs of the company
were discussed. They were entertain
ed at a banquet.
Mr. L. A. Andrews received a tel
egram this morning announcing that
his brother, Mr. Frank Andrews,
had died, and that his funeral ser
vices would be held Friday after
noon at his home in South Hill, Va.
Mr. Andrews died at a hospital in
Richmond, Va., where he a few days
since underwent an operation remov
ing one of his legs, on account of
the development of blood poison.
He was the youngest son of the
late Mr- C. H. Andrews, and grew
to manhood in this city. He has
many friends here, who regret his
death

BIRD LOVERS VISITED
CITY DURING PAST WEEK

Tufts, of Boston, retired teachers,

for the purpose of bird study. They
have previously visited Washington,
D. C., and Charleston, S. C., for the
me purpose.
Before leaving the city they re
ported that they had seen sixty-sev
en different varieties of birds in the
six days they spent here. They con
sidered Milledgeville a beautiful and
most cordial' city, and the best for
bird lovers of any city they had vis
ited.
THE MIDWAY CONFERENCE.
The second quarterly conference
of the Midway charge was held on
Sunday evening. The reports of the
pastor and officers were made, and
Mrs. L. S. Holsey and Mrs. C. C.
Sutton were elected delegates to the
District Conference. Mrs. H. A. Tcn-
nille and Mrs. Louise Lawson named
as alternates.
G. S. C. W. GLEE CLUB
TO BROADCAST TONIGHT
The Georgia State College for Wo
men Glee Club, under the direction
of Miss Alice Lenore Tucker, will
broudeast over the Mercer Univers
ity radio station this evening
(Thursday) in interest of the Parks
Memorial Hospital drive, this week
being Drive Week of the campaign.
The club will sing several num
bers and an interesting talk will be
given telling of the campaign and
urging co-operation. Miss Mary

All of the churches of this city
will celebrate next Sunday, the sec
ond Sunday in May, as Mother s
Day, with special musical programs
and special sermons by the pastors.
Arrangements have been made by
committees of the churches to take
flowers to' the Training School and
State Farm and to have flowers at
all the churches for the students.
STRINGENT LAW IS FAVORED

ATLANTA.—Enactment of a stat
ute similar to the Baumes law in
New York state imposes life impris
onment on persons convicted a
fourth time of felony was recom
mended by the Fulton county grand
jury at its March term.
The jury, representing the most
populous county in the state, was
presided over by J. P. Billups, gen
eral manager of «tho Atlanta and
West Point railroad.
