CHRISTMAS DAY MARKS THE
NATIVITY OF JESUS CHRIST
(Continued from front pago)
vals of a purely religious character,
has come to have a broad and gen
eral and worldly observation. It
could not be otherwise, and little
fault can be found with th? tendency.
s*nce into this general observation
there enters that spirit of Him in
whose Name the day is founded
which gives it its gr?a est charm. The
world could not afford to do without
that day of *‘p ace on earth to men
of good will," with its spirit of
giving and the general softening of
our nature;- which for one day
makes .>11 the world kin.
The observance of Christmas has
become almost universal, and com
mercialism has crept in. gf course.
We ate, for instance, in the street*,
of Tokyo and Pekin around the
Christian Christmas season, gaily be
decked s'ores and a generally festive
observed a Japanese >anta Claus,
with unmistakably Oriental features,
standing in front of a Buddist temple
in Kyoto, advertising the Chris ian
wares of a heathen department store.
■ It was commercialism pure and
! simple, but with the missionary
| vhoolft emphasizing the Chri»*ian
::.o.e throughout the empire, where
I >unday is now generally oh served,
by tie way, it was impossible for
Japanese unbelievers not to know
the story behind the Santa Claus, art!
not to feel the influence of the doc
trine which the Kazan ne preeched.
Indeed, on the same day that the
Christian Sunta Claus was teen in the
streets of Kyoto, there was also
found not far distant a band of
Hhuddist priests conducting a street
meeting after the fashion of the Sal
vation Army and engaging in <ucia)
r. rvice and other charitable work,
-he inspiration for which, like the
m eting itself, had come from the
doctrine preached by this same Jesus
whose Name the Christmas festival
is instituted.
