OHRMAS NOTATION
Ur REV. I F. YUIMUGH.
ChriNtnbMl How the very name
toucher the heart chords and wnda a
thrill of jojr. No one need tell us
it is the Christmas season. Those
w ho are blind can feel it. As this
u written our tnildren are in the
school room. But what is the need
just now? The genial face of old
Santa obscures every gometrical
figure and the mind is so filled with
the Riving of gifts that there is no
room for the minor things such as
•reading and writing and arithme-
Old men and wome.i have a
springy t*ep and a light in the eye
that we hav'nt seen since last
<’i ristmas. Those who haw been
wrapped up in self, living apparent
ly as if they had no :hought for any
body else, are trying to find the
poorest of the poor that there might
be no empty stockings on Christmas
morning.
What does i all mean? Why is
the world all so pepped up today?
What is Christmas anyhow?
It Is the celebration of th e birth-
dsy of Jesus of Nazareth.
Cut who is Jesus of Nazareth and
why should the whole world be
celebrating His birthday. Nearly
two thousand years ago He was born
in Bethlehem of Judea.
Read again the simple account of
this birth as it is recorded by
Matthew and Luke
His boyhood and young manhood
were spent in obscurity as He toiled
as a carpenter in a little town. For
nearly three years he taught the peo
ple as He lived sn itinerant life
among them and then He was nailed
to a crosa and died while hanging
between two thives.
As-irt we ask why should we be
celebrating His birthday? What did
He do, measured by the standard of
men, that with every recurring year
the whole world should more enthusi
astically celebrate His birthday? He
had no material wealth and He
carried no sword. And yet Mr.
Wells, the modem historian, has
recently said that neither he nor
informed man could write
names of six of the world’s greatest
men from creation down to
present time without naming Jesus
as the frist
Let us acknowledge without quibb
ling and with profound Thanksgiving
that He was not only Jesus the man
bat that He was and is the Christ the
sop of the living God.
The heart of man throughout all
tiase 1” called for a knowledge of
God. Implanted wi .hin mankind is
the crying out after life end a horri
ble revulsion against death.
In Jesus and in Him alone
do we find the full revelation
at God that satisfies the longing
heart. About Himself He said "He
that hath seen me hath seen the
Father.” The life that He lived and
the things that He did and the
mighty acclaim given to His birthday
these centuries after His death bear
unanswerable testimony to His claim
as the revealer of God.
If it is a test of faith to believe
that He is more than man—that He
is Christ—it surely requir.-s more of
faith to believe that He was only a
plain carpentei nd yet did the
things that He uid and is today the
mightiest ferce in the world.
The cry of the heart for God is
found satisfied in those who know
Him.
He conqured death and lives to
day. And the crying out for life
is found satisfied in the hearts of
those who have found Him. Because
He lives we shall live also. No won
der the world celebrates His birth
day! The burdened com e to Him
and find rest. They who mourn are
comforted. They who rejoice rejoice
the more because of Him. And be
cause of Him old Santa Claus is
busy filling the stocknigs of the poor
and helping to make it a happier
world for everybody, and in answer
to the question “Why Christmas” the
answer comes because of Christ.
As w« give to others let us give
our lives to Him and cooperate with
Him in the redemption of the world.
With Tiny Tim we say” God bless
everybody.” ,
