The great mistake that is made in
early poinoning is the failure to get
the poi-sin in .he buds. In applying
the poison as a liquid it is sometimes
a little tedious to put it exactly in
the buds hut it must be remembered
that if it is not put in the buds it >

the only place I have ever found

Either the dust or liquid poison
works well when the plants are
young. Some say that the liquid is
the cheaper of the two and if you
can poison cheaper with the liquid
and with as much efficiency by all
means use thnt method. A sack made
of good bodticking material will
answer the purpose when poisoning

That the future of the railroads in
this country depends upon the atti
tude American business men take to
ward the carriers, is the assertion of
President .John J. Pclley of the Cen-
tral of Georgia Railway in a state
ment published today. The railroads
are an integral part of the country's
commercial organization and should
be so regarded by every one, accord
ing to Mr. Pel ley. He says:
"Eight years age this month the
railways were returned from Govern-
n^ent control to tihe operation of their
owners. There is general recognition
of the fact that railroad service has
greatly improved wince 1920. The
railways can now be depended upon
to function efficiently. Every line
of business and commerce benefits
decidedly through this reliable ser
vice. Looking to the future, it is a
matter of vital concern both to the
public nnd to the railways that trans
portation maintain prevailing stand
ards of service."
Mr. Pclley declares thnt the im-
proveinenta of the past eight years
"did no - come about by chance” but
that numerous factors have con
tributed to transportation's achieve
ments. Among these he lists the in
vestment of vast sums in improved
facilities and equipment, efficiency
.of management, the high morale of
railway employes and the co-opera
tion of the public.
The Central's President cites six
fundamental facts about the rail
roads which he says the public
should keep clearly in mind. The.***
are: That the railwuys as a whole are
hot now earning, nor have they earn
ed in auy of the past eight years,
the so-called "fair return" contempla
ted in the law under wdiich they oper
ate; that railroad freight rates have
been consistently declining for the
past years; that while freight traffic
broke all records for volume in
1926, it declined last year and shows
still further decreaws this year; that
although passenger traffic grows
steadily less, the railroads arc requir
ed to operate numerous unprofitable
passenger trains; that large groups
of railroad employes have been given
wage increases; and thut taxes are on
a constantly ascending scale.
Mr. Pelley closes with the assertion
that further encroachments upon the
earning power of the railroads will
adversely effect their ability to rend
er satisfactory service, and thus re
act unfavorably upon every line of
business.
