Snow began falling in this city la-
Thursday morning soon after day
light and continued seven or eight
hours. Owing to the warmth of the
ground the first snow melted
produced a dampncs> that continued
to dissolve the foiling flukes, but this
unfavorable condition was finally
overcome and the ground was cover-
o u depth of two or three inches.
Snow is a rare occurrence here and
is very demoralizing in its effects.
Very little work was done in the city
la^t Thursday. It seemed to
generally understood that the weath-
bureau had declared a holiday.
Capt. Spain suspended the rules
and allowed the cadets the privilege
of the streets Thursday before their
afternoon drill. The whole corps
paraded the streets armed with 1
balls and drove all unfortunate pede
strians to shelter. It was rare sport
for the boys.

The Spelling Bee given by the
ladies of the St. Stephens church
came off at the court house on Tue>
day evening last, and was well at
tended. Rev. D. McQueen called the
class. Tha ladies with the exception
ic or two were present, but many
of the young men were wanting.
Only a very few words had been
spelled, when “Baize” was given
Capt F. O. Spain, who unsuccessfully
spelled it, he took a back seat feel
ing contented over the honor* that
awaited him. After a mot* pleasing
contest, one young man was left
standing and twelve young bdies, he
soon yielded his place, and after a
long contest among the twelve young
ladies. Miss Olive Herty remained
as the most successful.
Rev. D. McQueen gave the words
and many of the hardest and most
j difficult words were used. Capt. C.
P. Crawford, the referee, decided all
unsatisfactory words. After the Bee

PERCHES AROUND LIGHTHOUSE
TO SAVE BIRDS
London, April 1.— (Autocaster) —
Th** Royal Society for the Protec
tion of Birds* has erected large
perches around the tops of various
lighthouses which are on the birds
favorite flying route around the
British Isles.
The bright beams of the light
house;/ arc responsible for the deaths
of tens of thousands of birds annual
ly. They are attracted like moths to
a candle by the brilliant light, and
finding no refuge the flocks in nu
merous instances fly round and
round until exhausted and finally
drop into tl.« sea.
The same beams now point the
way to a haven of rest Feed boxes Augusta maki
