Mr. J. R. Norment Enthused
Over Annual Sing Idea
an un-1 forty
The following was addressed to
Mr«. K. R. Hinea complimenting the
Federated Clubs on the Annual
School Sin* and Picnic Idea. The
author of the letter, Mr. J. R. Nor
ment. i» President of the County
Board of Education and one of Bald
win county's most beloved citizens.
Dear Mrs. Hines:
As the day draws near for the
Rural Schools to have their Annual
Sine and a good time generally, I
feel moved to drop you, and the
good women associated with you in
the Baldwin county Federation, n line
of appreciation and commendation.
As a member of the County Board
of Education I have from the inci-
piency of your work of love, been
in huarty sympathy with yo
purpose in carrying forward
dertaking involving real sacn
your part with no other promise of
reward than an approving conscience
for service rendered others.
More and more ns you have gone
ahead with this work have the school
communities realized the value of it.
The children receiving much “side
line" (?) information to store away
in their impressionable minds while
at the same time having their young
hearts gladdened by the wholesome
worthwhile things you give tnem.
Said one of our rural teachers “I
believe the children had rather have
the ladies come along with their
message than go themwelves to a
picture show." We who know the
child heart understand that this was
no doubtful compliment.
Have you and your co-workers
some times thought that your work
was not fully appreciated by those
you sought to help both directly and
indirectly?
It is frequently the case no doubt
that those who seek to better con
ditions here and add to the sum total
of human happiness, have misgivings
and meet with discouragements.
If there was skepticism at first it
has taken wings and flown away, as
you ladies have gone along giving the
little folks a cheerful view point of
life. The life that lies before them
with it* stern realities yet with it's
music, it's birds and it's flowers. No
telling Mrs. Hines, how greatly it
helps the children to feel that there
are others besides those regularly
.•mployed to train their minds who
take u lively interest in their present
happiness and future welfare.

even greater co-operation in the fu
ture than has been given in the past.
That this will come from every
source from which you might reason
ably expect to receive it and in
abundant measure.
You do not complain, its rot fash
ionable for you, and, others of the
Federated Club to do such a thing.
The implied complaint, mild as it is;
is all mine: with it goes the confession
that in a sense 1 too have been a
Have just been reading a fine let
ter from an old friend in Virginia.
Among other things, she tells of a
fine work of love inaugurated some
d(i years ago by herself and
evoted souls, saying she had
lived to see their labor in the cause
bear fruit: that it had proven a bless
ing to others and a joy to themselves.
1 trust it will be even so with you
and your associates. She was work
ing for the aged—the old folks—you
for the young: believe I’d like your
job the better.
Certainly every one should come
along to the Annual Sing and Picnic.
From my earnest recollection I
have been a little daffy over music
holding that next after being taugh
to say their prayers, children should
be taught to sing.
So here's to the women of th«* Fed-
erated Club! and here's to the Annual
Sing and Picnic!
