One of our best farmer* remarked
conversation last Saturday, that
the trouble is that they get too little
f. r what they sell, and pay too much
for what they buy.
One of the funniest scenes ever
freely exhibited in this town came
.ff opposite Evans Warehouse
Thursday morning. Bill Quinns
modest turn-out from the Pony woods
so well known to everybody, and
tome countryman’s crazy mule were
the leaders in the unprecedented
street performance. The mule ap
peared to have un antipathy for the
little jenny, his first cousin, and she
went for her with hind heels, hind
heels cutting the air in every imagin
able attitude and muscular power.
Scores of people rush?d to the rescue
»f the faithful little jenny from the
rude assault of that four-footed
guitcan, and she returned the as
sault with all the vigor her kind leggs
retained. The mule was stoned and
whipped and beaten with sticks, for
several minutes, or more did this son
«f un ass keep up his malicious attack
on the faithful animal that Quinn de
pend* on for a living. And finally,
the mule was only compelled to retire
under the heavy fire of Quinn’s own
splinters.

THE GROWING SOUTH
(By W. O. Kimtey)
The year 1928 promises to reach
a new high peak in construction and
building activities in Milledgeville
and environs. Many great programs
are under way. other contract:
awarded, and a number yet to bt
awarded shortly.
The amount expended for th« con
struction and repairing of roads and
bridges from July 1, 1927,
cember 31, 1927. in Baldwin county
was $25,775.16, and the county i:
eluding in its program for this year
more extensive improvements than
the pawt.
Not only is Milledgeville making
tremendous building and construc
tion strides, however. A
state, in large cities, the smaller
cities, and in the towns, there
general building activities which
pass all record* of the past. Atlanta
alone has awarded and is to award
contracts amounting to $8,000,000
(eight million dollars) for building
purposes this year.
This is not only true of Georgia,
but also of the south as a whole. The
manufacturers Record of February
2nd, says:
“Contractu awarded in January
the 10 southern states for all classes
of building, industrial and construc
tion projects, had a total valuation
of $52,493,000 as shown by a compi-

months of 1928.”
The south is growing by leaps and
bounds. THe financial giant h,as
aroused himself from hi* slumbers
to u full realization of the possibili-
ties of the southland, and of the rich
rewind that can be harvested by the
developer.
Surely no one can say that the
south j* not progressing. It is mov
ing steadily forward along construc
tive lines, without boom or inflation.
