I The New C»l«e<*er
| Attention has been called several
times in this column to the efforts bo
lus; made to have adopted a new oal-
endar having 13 months of 23 days
each.
I ha? been .-•uggeried that America
have the courage -o adopt this stand
ard without waiting for Europe. If
it shall be so, if the South America*
and North American countries unite
I -heir efort to change the cnlendnr
I : t will be another indication that
I American civilization has definitely
I broken the bonds still further that
I heretofore have tied them to the
I older peoples of Europe.
I We have got used to the old tys-

I it- drawbacks, but we know what
I they are. We do not know what
faculties an untried plan would in-
ve.
Most of us are familiar will the
I proposal. It is to have 13 months of
[ days .exactly 4 weeks in each
month, making every week day occur-
on a fixed monthly date and having
every holiday occur on the tame
I week day, making calendars unneces
sary, having the date of the week
indicate the day of the month, add
ing an extra day to the year and in
serting an extra month, the 13th, as
a month called Sol between June and
July, and adding a extra day every
Leap Year to June.
This seems to be a subject that
could well be considered by the Lea
gue of Nations, but it is now proposed
that America lead the way without
waiting for world consent.
Mr. Cotsworth says that if. con
servative Europe could discard the
computations of hundreds of years
and adopt the metric system of
weights and measures it is not too

PRESIDENT PELLY DISCUSSES
SUMMER TRAVEL BY RAIL
The manner in which the railroads
cater to the summer traveler is dis
cussed by President J. J. Policy of
the Central of Georgia Railway in a
statement published today.
“During the warm months of sum
mer more persons take advantage of
the passenger service of the railroads
than .at any other time” says ■ Mr.
Pelly. “Tourists, summer vacation-
commuters, comm.-rcial travel-
and others use the . ail roads be
st they offer the most convenient
and comfortable way of trotting from
place to place with maximum speed
•and safety. The summer traveler
recognizes that screened and electric
ally cooled railroad pa .-enger cars
afford protection from heat, dust,
, storms and similar inconveni
ence*; encountered when traveling by
other means.”
Mr. Pelley states that not only is
railroad service convenient, combort-
able and reliable but that reruccd
rates make it possible for those of
i the most moderate income to
make summer trips. Among the rate
concessions to the summer traveler,
he lists the summer excursion fares
effect from May 15 through Oc
tober 31, circle tour fares permitting!
the traveler to go over one route and
return via another, and the combina
tion rail and wntcr trips. Stop-over
privileges a*, point* en route are per
mitted or. the.* ? tickets. He also men
tions Sunday and week-end excursion
fare?, as well as the special excurs
ions the railroad operates during the
summer, for all of which even low
er rates are made.
/ President Pelley stresses the at
tractiveness and benefits of a
trip. Summer, he declares, in
ideal time for .an ocean voyage,
the weather i» then generally fair and
the sea smooth. As proof of the
efficient America could discard
antique calendar wholly unadopted to
this modern age.
safety of steamships he cites the fact
that during its nearly eighty years
of operation the Ocean Steamship
Company of Savannah has not had
a passenger fatality, although in that
time millions of passengers have been
safely handled. In addition to being
President of the Central of Georgia
Railway, Mr Policy is president of
the Ocean Steamship Company which
operates a fleet of thoruoghly modern
steamships with three sailings weekly
from Savannah to both New York and
Boston.
Mr. Pelley urges the traveling pub
lic to make free use of the services
of Central of Georgia ticket agents
and passenger representatives or of
any officer or employe of the railroad
who can aid them. He states: “The
ticket agent’s service is not lraiited
to selling a ticket or telling when the
next train will leave, lie can tele
graph ahead for sleeping car or
steamship reservations. He can
recommend best routes to travel,
quote train schedules on sleeping cur
lines of his own and connecting
roads, or can aid in planning extend
ed trips. He has, or can quickly ob
tain, almost any information the
traveler may need. He is at the com
mand of the public.”
