It is like the shadow of a great
rock in a weary land to run across,
as w* do occasionally, a man who
keeps his word.
You may be able to sue on written
promises and contract* put in writing
which ore usually binding, but some
how the nun who does not keep his
word strictly is a slippery customer
and it is hard to get hold of him,
even with a piece of writing.
The fundamental security for t
man doing what he promises is, af
ter all, character.
If a man has character and is up
right you are safer in lending him
money than if he gives you a mortg
age on his farm. Doing business
with a liar is never aatisfactory
Somehow he will attempt to wrigglt
out of his promises.
It is easy to detect the strictly
honest person. When he owes
money he does not avoid you,
openly and frankly pays you si
thing on account right along, if he
cannot pay the whole amount.
The test of the fundamentally hon
est man is his punctuality in meet
ing his engagements or in franWy ex
plaining to you why those engage
ments cannot be met.
The courts arc full of people try
ing to evade their plain engagements.
A man who is in debt sincerely
trie« to meet that debt whether it
hurts him or not It is very trying
and very disturbing to our faith in
human nature to find a person who
not doing as he said he would do.
The good loser, the man who loses
and yet is cheerful is the man who
is after all one of the chief pillars of
the social fabric.
