FORD RADIATORS GIVEN
SEVERAL TESTS
President Coolidge delivered a raes-
t . on peeoration Day of this year
which he pointed out the fact
,«. t n" matter where « war might
reak *- ut * n wor l‘* ^ would bo
r«-judicial to this country.
War is simply lawlewness and de-
ruction and the commercial interests
. the United States today are so
niespread, our investments and
!r8 de relations are so far reaching
iv ,t it is almost impowihle to con-
«>f any conflict anywhere on
, .rth which would not affect us in-
.iurio isly.
The President also stressed the
• i that the United States is en
gaged in warfare only for the pm-
- ,tion of American citizens. It is
incumbent upon every nution to pro- •
its own citizens.
Unfortunately the plan of Wood-
w Wilson lor a league of nations
did not receive universal support.
While this writer enthusiastically
ip ported Mr. Wilson’s id;-a he holds
no brief for any one plan.
Equji'ly to be approved are the
efforts Secretary of State Kellogg
to con \ide a treaty with European
power- for the complete outlawry of
iv;i? lust so we arrive at a stage of
ei. iii; ition where war is not coun-
nanced and glorified it makes no
difference by what route we got-
Mr. Coolidge also laid stress upon
the best argument of the- most in-
teligent pacifists, to wit, that “the
chief defenses of America lie not in
her armed forces but in the industry,
prosperity and patriotism of her peo
ple: these are of far greater import
ance than preparedness.”
The -ame day at Thiuucourt, France
General Pershing addressed an audi
ence where he said that “millions of
craves cry out against war, and the
big nations must show the way to
durable peace.”
He continued that war threatened
civilization because of the “fallacious
theory that war is an essential ele
ment in the national policy of a
government,” and an erroneous be
lief that nations become great through
aggressive undertakings.
General Pershing insisted that his
tory disproves that the expansion of
one modern civilized nation at the ex
in the Highland p ar k p u n t 0 f the
Ford Motor Company at Detroit,
there is a machine which tries with
all the efficient fiendishness of an
engine oif destruction, to shake the
life out of a Ford automobile radiator
in the shortest possible time.
Ten hours is the time allotted to
tr.is machine, known as an •'agitator,"
to do all within its power to ruin u
water-filled Ford rudiatru. At the
end of that period hte much abused
radiator is taken off ihe machine and
examined by experts for any sign.- of
damage and a brand new Ford radia
tor, alno filled with water, is put on
for another ten hours of torment.
This agitator device is part of the
testing equipment for radiators that
are being built for the new Model
“A" Ford car. When you watch it
jiggling and jolting and .-haking the
gurgling radiator, you have : feling
that no automobile drive could drive
a car over roads and at a speed which
would ghe it such a severe shaking
up nad still hold on to his wheel and
fcis j*.-at. Then the factory foreman
tells you that within the period of
ten hours this ugitator gives the new
radiator more and severer jars and
jolts than the average Ford car will
get in its whole 'lifetime of service.
An he '.ells you also that the great
majority of radiators tested on thiw
agitator come through the ordeal
without a sign of injury. Those that
rpring even the smallest leaks are
rare indeed.
Then the fort-man takes you
through the radiator factory and
shows you that every part of the radi
ator which is touched by water is
made of cither copper or brass', which
will not ru*t and which will resist
corrosion to a high degree. He shows
you also htut the construction of the
entire radiator is ruged and strong— i

“There would appear to be no
longer any reason," he said, “why the j
L ading civilized powers could not |
agree among themselves to the gen- [
erul principal of the elimination of
war as an avowed instrument of
national policy.”
It need not interfere with the
ncesshies of reasonable armament,
he said, “nor the fulfillment of con
sistent obligations."
The day is coming when public
opinion, that final arbitor of destiny,
will rapidly turn against war.

pruts welded and soldered together
in such a manner that engine vibra
tion and road jars cannot shake them
apart.
To make sure that the finished
radiator is free from leaks or poten
tial leaks, as soon as it comes off the
assembly line it is given a severe
compressed air test. Filled with air
under high pressure and sealed, the
radiator is submersed in n tank of
water. If there is the .'lightest sign
of bubbles, due to escaping air, the
radiator si thrown out n» faulty.
The foreman points out to you al
so the features of this new Ford
radiator which make it an unusually
efficient unit of the cooling system.
The upper and lower tanks are large.
The openings through which the water
flows from the tanks into the radiator
tubes are hell-shaped, thus> providing
faster flow and faster circulation of
the water. The tubes of copper and
the fins of brass permit very rapid
radiation of the heat and therefore
quicker cooling.
Throughout the radiator of the
Ford car has been built in keeping
with the greater power, speed and
durability of the Model “A” Ford.
