GA., NOVEMBER I, 1926 Baldwin County Women Rally to the Support Southern Jeffersonian Democracy READ THIS BEFORE YOU VOTE! o: Enroll your Name and Give your Vigorous Support to the Success of the Democratic Party WE THE UNDERSIGNED MEMBERS OF THE BALDWIN COUNTY WOMAN S DEMOCRATIC CLUB URGE EVERY WOMAN TO JOIN WITH US THAT BALDWIN COUNTY ROLL UP A LARGE MAJORITY FOR ALL OUR PARTvI NOMINEES BL VOTING THE STRAIGHT DEMOCRATIC TICKET ON NOVEMBER 6TH READ THE RESOLUTION ADOPTED AT OUR ORGANISATION MEETING AND SEND IN YOUR NAME FOR MEMBERSHIP IN OUR CLUB BY PHONE OR LETTER TO MRS. J. E. POTTLE. CHAIRMAN MRS E ^ TIC NER, VICE-CHAIRMAN; MRS. J. H. ENNIS, SECRETARY AND TREASURER. A Kesolu ticn Whereas, there are so many inconsistent and con- i lifting statements dealing: with personalities in the National Campaign making it difficult to know whether or not we should accept the candidates of the Democratic and Re publican parties as honorable and clean statesmen or be lieve the defamatory and scandalousc utterances against tnem, placing them upon the same plane of fitness or un fitness,—we recognize that this Government is one of party administration and not a personal one and, as voters de siring to wisely cast our ballots on November the 6th, we are eliminating the personal equation between these candi dates and of necessity in the circumstances, must cast our ballot for the best political party from our own viewpoint; and, Whereas, the history of the democratic party shows that it has best underwood and appreciated our conditions and problems in our Southland and has sympathetically as sisted in their solution commencing with the dark days con cluding the Confederacy to the present time as against the unsympathetic and oppressive attitude of the republican party from the days of reconstruction to this day of the Dyer anti-lynch bill; and, Whereas, it was the resistence of our democratic repre sentatives in the last Congress that prevented the passtge of the said Dyer bill which has for its purpose the levying of a 610,000.00 penalty on the tax-payers of a county to be used for the benefit of the relatives of the criminal and without any consideration of the violated and suffering ctim and her family; and. the * ier. M for |i tj H G cm »♦»♦* ^ Whereas, the platform of the republican party pledges itself for the passage of such a law and the author of the said bill, the republican Congressman L. C. Dyer, has lately, towit, on October the 13th, stated that the passage of this kiw will set in motion the passage of other laws that will such a thick wedge through the heart of the Solid South and their white supremacy slogan that it will blow up their whole unconstitutional program," ajnd further listed, "after the Solid South has been blown to pieces by tnffineer Hoover, our next President, that will be the finish of the nuDificationists of the South • • • and place them (the negroes) on an equality with all other races,”—thus making it clear that the success of the republican party would violate the traditions of our Southland and would up- t the social status of our people and throw our peaceful section into racial strife with all its attendant dangers and bloodshed recalling the days of reconstruction, aad a ve*e r lb* republic** candidate. would b* • declaration that approve of their platform *>d of their porpoeee to pom •xch laws; and, Where**, we wish to con mend our democratic rep re- •rotative, for their stand la resisting the passage of said o urge their continued efforts to prevent its passage o the preservation of our present social status and to the e and hnrraony now existing between ourselves and the member# of the colored race; and, hereas, the size of Georgia’s pocket-book and bank un t and her prosperity are dependent upon agriculture we brow that, on account of the deserted farms of *ho coaid not make a living in the present conditions, a is growing up in weeds and thos* farmers still sur. on the farms srsd help and the democratic platform • candidates pledge specific and definite aid to our • a# against the past eight years of inertia and broken promises on the part of the republican party to re lieve the distressing condition of the farmers; and. Whereat*, the matter of the prohibition law cannot Le modified or chungcd except by the act of the Congress, the same power that enacted it, and the platform and the candidate-* of the democratic party pledged strict enforce ment of the present law as against the exasive attitude of the republican platform and its candidates and. the utter failure of its enforcement by the republican administra tion the past eight years ("by their fruits ye shall know them”) and particularly in view of the fact that in the State of Georgia our “bone dry law" is much stricter than the National law and hence in the event of the modification and even repeal of the National law, our Supreme Court has held that our State law would still be enforce and could not be changed or modified without State action; nnd, Whereas, the democratic platform and it# candidates specifically provides for an equality of wages to women with that of men engaged in the same occupations; and. Whereas, the wisdom of the framers of our Constitu tion against religious tests as a requirement for office in these Unites States has been justified in that members of the Catholic faith have filled the highest office# of the Judiciary—chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and the highest offices in our Legislative Department —members of Congress and the Senate; and have stood the test of loyalty and courage both as officers and as enlisted men on the battle front—and they are in like manner quali fied for the Chief Executive and a# President of these United States and hence a vote against one on account of religious prejudice is both unconstitutional and un-Amer ican and is necessarily an abuse of the privilege and right to vote as well as a violation of our fundamental principle of keeping Church and State separate; and, Whereas, both our Senatros and all of our Congress men of Georgia, who are in a better position than ourselves to know the true situation relating to the real issues in this Campaign, a-e, without exception, not only standing by the party themselves, but are unanimously and enthuaiastically urging the support of the Democratic National party: Therefore, be is resolved: that we the Women Voter* of Baldwin County, are proud of the part that the Demo cratic Party has played in the history of our country and of its achievements of the past and we pledge our vote and support of the Democratic Party as representing our nation al attitude in the matters that confront our Nation, and to this ».nd we form ourselves into an organization to be known as Baldwin County Woman’s Democratic League, and we urge all voters, both men and women, not to be misled into the tanks of the Republican Party, under the disguise of "Anti-Smith” or any other party-name, but to join us in making the majority for the Democratic Ticket on Novem ber 6th, the target* in its htatory. Be it further rerolved: that we thank our Senators and Congressmen for their resistance to the vicious Republican Dyer bill that threatens the peace and harmony of the rac«-s in our Southland ard cur State. Be it further resolved: that a copy of this resolution be sent to the press xcr publication. Unanimously adopted. This Octobc 17th, 1923. At Milkdgeville, Georgia. MRS. JOS. E. POTTLE, Chairman.
