UNION RECORDER, MILLEDGEVILLE, GA., DECEMBER 13, 112* TOBACCO CAN BE SUCCESSFUL LY GROWN IN BALDWIN COUNTY “It has heOn demonstrated that tobacco can'-b* jfrowni in Baldwin county as-Mcceaafully ah in any P» rt cf thv country," says Mr. G. li. Tun- nhll, ohairmnn ©$>! the n „ARricul ural Committee of the Kiwianis Club. The interest ip- tobacco growuuc in Baldwin county resulted from an ad dress last fall by Mr. Oscar Walls to the Chamber of Commerce, in which he pointed out the opportunity that Baldwin h"d for KT°w* n K tobacco. He expressed the desire to .see his native county progress in this alonp with Putnam and the surrounding coun- A tobacco demonstrator came to investigate conditions. At a dinner given by, the Kiwanis Club to sixty of the leading busine.-« men of town, the demonstrator so completely sold the tobacco growing proposition that within two days over twenty-two hun dred dollars had been subscribed to back it. A tobacco demonstrator was em ployed. Ten seed beds were grown. One hundred and seventeen acres were planted and the production reached 75,000 pounds of tobacco. Unfortunately the prices this • year were low, but this crop proved that tobacco can be succ?s?fully grown here. It is not the purpose of the back ers of the proposition to introduce tobacco as a main crop but to let it meet the cotton and corn crops. By planting the seed beds in Jan aary, harvesting the tobucco in Au gust, and by making use of the fuv- roable soil, climate and other con ditions, tobacco may easily be made one of the staple crops. Too, the sale of it brings money to the farmer at what is usually his dullest jtfason. “We, the Agriculture Committee of the Kiwianis Club, have accomplish ed our purpose,” said Mr. Tunnel! by showing this year that tobacco can be grown to an advantage. It is now up to the farmers. The whole hearted spirit with which they work ed last year and the plans being made already for increased acreage this . year point to the successful establish ment of the tobacco industry.” LOANS TO STUDENTS BY COL LEGES TOTAL $4,000,000 A , YEAR Washington—Funds totaling near ly $4,000,000 are lent annually by 282 colleges and universities to stu dents of character and ability to en able them to finish their college edu cation.
