The new steam plant will be of 100,000 horsepower capacity, by comparison with the Tulluinh Falls plunt which has a capacity of 108,- OdO horsepower. It will be several times larger than any other steam ' electric generating plant now in operation in the state. The new plant, when completed, . will be large enough to supply nil of the electric needs of Atlunta und its metropolitan district, even if all other sources of power supply should be off. Such an arrangement is alrcnry in effect by reason of the fact that, when needed, power may now he brought to Georgia over the interconnected transmission lines from the large mine-mouth steam generating plants of the Alabama Power Company, but the new gen erating station now announced will be the first major steam power de velopment in Georgia. Aside from the primary objects of protection to the Atlanta metropoli tan area load and the value of this steam plant to all communities on the Company’s lines in times of ex treme dr.-ught such ns occurred in 11)25, officers of the company stated that the improvement in efficiency of s earn electric power plants and their reduction in capital cost, due to the huger units now available, has been so great during the past twelve years that today only the most favor-* ably located hydroelectric projects can be developed as economically as steam electric plants. The new plant will be equipped with a single steam turbin generator of 100,000 horsepower capacity, the largest single generating unit in state and one of the largest in the south. It will have two large boilers which will deliver the steam against the blades of the turbines at a pres sure of 450 pounds to the square inch. An idea of the magnitude of the new station is given by the fact that the boilers will be capable of delivering the steam at this pressure and at a temperature of 725 de grees at a rate of 450.000 pounds per hour.
