DANIEL AMONG THE LIONS
Stone* frc-ni Daniel’s life have a
fascination for children and con
tinue to give g r cat teaching lessons
also to those of older years. As a
hook of romance the Bible reveals
the truth that is stranger than fic
tion.
Joseph became prime minister in
Egypt because of his innate worth
and the ^ame is true of Daniel in
Babylon. As he had been a marked
man under the Chaldean rule, so he
teas preferred by Darir the Mede
who became the conqueror. The

dent. The fact that he was a Jew
led to much jealousy by the other
officials and they planned to do away
with him if possible.
Religion offered the one sure
ground of attack, for these evil men
were certain what Daniel would al
ways d<> in his relationship with God.
With Daniel’s dependable habits in
mind it was agreed at the caucus to
appeal to the king’s pride and pro-
po;c that a decree be promulgated
forbidding anyone to pray during
thirty days except as Darius was the
nbpect of their approach. The penal,
ty for disobedience was to be cast
into the den of lionr.
Sypers were watching Daniel who i
had the known habit of praying to
Jehovah at least three times a day.

As a part of their program in
! suppressing the spread of contagious 1
diseases and in their efforts to pre
vent epidemics, physicians and vari-
ou- health organizations have advo-
i rated for years the administration
of certain vaccines and sera to ac
complish these ends. Notable among
these attempts in our own county has
been tm giving of typhoid vaccine
to all who desired protection and im
munity from typhoid fever, and it

and death rate.- from this dls-

death reported from typhoid fever in

Certain other diseases lend them
selves to similar methods as regards
preventive measures. These will be
i ferred to from time to time in the
columns of local papers, since it is
only in this way that the majority of
; . ople may be acquainted with the
immediate problems and plans of the
County Health Department.
The purpose of this article is three
fold: first, to call the attention of (
the public to n few of the salier.: i
fact.- regarding Diphtheria; second,
to remind tho^c interested that as
the season approaches for the ap
pearance of the disease measures
J.ould be instituted for its control;
third, that your County Health De

to protect numbers of children who

MISTAKE ON NEW TWO-DOLLAR
BILL DISTURBS PURISTS
Always skeptical of two-dollar
bills, people who are interested in
tuch things evidently have been get
ting a great deal of pleasure during
the past few days in calling the
government's attention to a mistake
on the two-dollar denomination of
the new-.-ize currency. Those who
lik:* their history pure are finding
fault with the pictured version of the
home of Thomas Jefferson on the re
verse side of the bill.
The crux of the controversy is
that the engraving of Monticello,
Jefferson's home, shows two beauti
ful lions placed there not by the
former president, but by Jefferson
pear. The Health Department has
funds to provide sufficient serum to
protect a certain number of children.
Tho-e who wish to have this series of
punctures for their children from six
months to ten years of age will please
report this to the Health Department
office within a week from the date
of this notice, so that all the material
required may be purchased in one
lot.
M. Levy, of New York, during his la.
ter control of the property.
A careful search in the libraries
and art galleries of Washington re
veals that the original pictures did
not show any lions. So the history
purists are alarned over the error,
while those who don't care one way
or the other about the lion* are
possibly getting just about as much
for their two-dollar bills as if the
beasts weren’t there at all.
Th'.- discovery was made by Gene
Ogilvie, manager of the University
Branch of the Feople’s National Bank
of Charlottesville, but the picture has
been attracting considerable atten
tion of pedants throughout the
country. The images of the two
lions were placed one on each side
of the veranda of the Jefferson
mansion by Mr. Levy, but when the
Thon^as Jefferson Memorial Foun
dation bought the estate the beasts
were taken away. Their where
about* today are not known so far
as can be learned.
Treasury officials are as yet un
able to say whether the story of the
lions is accurate. They thought the
picture they used was all right, and
no official protests agauist it huve
been received.

months and ten year.*.' It is more
prevalent among white than among
colored children. It teaches its
maximum prevalence in the autumn
of euch year, its spread being favor,
ed by sore throats and colds—the
later being largely accounted for
by the presence of diseased tonsils
and adenoids or by living in damp
dwellings with inefficient ventila
tion. As regur-.ls transmission, the
gtrm enters by the mouth or nose
and usually localizes in the upper
breuthing passages. It is conveyed
either directly from one person to
another through contact or indirect
ly by means of toys, pencils, food,
fingers, cups, etc. Milk has even been
known to become infected and to
transmit the disease.
Diphtheria often begins insidious
ly, without pain or local indications
and with little or no fever.' In fact
it may exist several days before be
ing noticed, so that its early recog
nition is very important. Any sore
throat occurring in children deserves
prompt investigation by a physician.
Fortunately, the disease may be
prevented in 80 to 90 percent of
susceptible children by the adminis
tration of three doses of toxin-anti-
tonin at weekly intervals. This pro
cedure is entirely hnrmless and
practiced on a large scale in cities
which have the neccesary funds tc
provide for its general distribution.
Since it requires on an average of
six or eight weeks for immunity to
develop ni a child who has rec<
the three toxin-antitoxin injection?,
it is necessary to begin the punctures
