Th* Critical Hoar
Should you ask the ^.iptain of the
traffic-police to refer to his record*,
he could tell you almost eractly how
ay men and women will be injured
the streeta on any particular day
of the year. Moreover, he could tell
you at what hour of the day the
probability of accident is greatest.
1 saw only recently in a medical H
magazine a study of the figures for H
the city of New York. The early-
morning hour., are comparatively
rafe; the light is good in those hours;
the lights are glaring and, outside our
souls and in, the accidents occur?

I often wonder about it. when I
sit in nty office on the fifteenth ,
floor and watch the lights going out
one after another in the office build-'
ings opposite. Every light snapped ,
off means n desk pulled down, and a
man starting away from his work, i
What thoughts are in his mind, as I
he turns up hsi overcoat collar and j
rteps into the street?
there children and a woman
for him. somewhere in the;
suburbs? A faithful little woman, i
taking off the Iviby’s Bhoes, and fay-j
ing every time the whistle of a train
is head. “Do you think that Daddy (
is on that train?”
Is this the picture that is in his |
mind at the critical hour? Or hnsj
he telephoned that “is kept down-!
until late?’’ *
Does the twilight that draws its
veil across his work lift the man
higher than the level of the day’s
occupation? Or does it sink his i
thoughts lower, to meaner occupa- '
tjons and bu-er joys?
It seems to me if I were hiring
a man, I should like very much to
know what thoughts are in his mind,
in that critical hour. I should like
to know whether, if one could look
into his >oul, as through a window,
the man would stand straight with j
pride under that scrutiny, or blush j
with embarrassment.
In the whirl of the business day,!
when the routine of things carries |
us along, we tend to be a good deal i
alike in our mental processes. We ,
are not so interesting then. But the j
clock strikes five or five-thirty, and j
we ore no longer clerks or plumbers
or millionaires, out men—our!
thoughts set free. What do wo think j
of them at the critical hour, between I
five and six, when we are hurrying
away from our work—the hour when j
