Cburies llertyjgia can call him her own son, for The occasion for my visit was the meeting of the Georgia Press which was held out at Emory. It has be come an annual custom, or bettor than thaa, a rule, that the Georgia editors go to school once each year and try to learn a little more about the game of operating a country new. paper. • Dr. Cox and his Emory faculty gave the editors the full benefit of their magnificent educational plant. In the language of the eminent edu cator, Dr. Cox. “both the members of the prra.s and live students bene fited by the institute ut Emory." We brought, aj least wo hope wt did, new ideas to the college and they gave us many. I believe every edi tor that attnded the school thi- year feels belter equipped to render his state and county a real service. A great majority of the discussions were conducted with a view of edify, ing the editors. Advertising, the life blood of the editor, editorial policies, foattMi*. [subscription contests and other topics, which are of very little interest to the person outiside of the newspaper office, were considered. his hea the tav cond speaker who told ill ekly lt’iiiegh, N. ( all of his life, first j Thero were two speakers on the program that brought so much new information to u.s that I believe all of the people of Georgia will be interested in hearing something about the things they told us. Milledgevilie’s own great chem ist, Dr. Charlie Herty, possibly brought more real information about things that are being done to help Georgia than any other. Dr. Ilerty is now giving exactly h-lf of each year to the study and development of Georgia’s natural n|<our;es. For fccvcrnl months he has directed an investigation of the cotton seed an<{ from it the development of products which can be commercialized and bring more money to our farmer. He has succeeded in refining cotton seed meal to such a fine degree thut it can be served as food. 1 actually nte a cotton seed meal sandwich and be lieve it or not it wus delicious Dr. Herty showed that there is more pro tein in one pound of cotton seed meal than there is in meat or milk, the common foods that are high in pro tein qualities. In fncti the noted chemist said you can get the same amount of protein in five cents worth of cotton seed meal that you can get in $2.50 worth of beef steak or $2.75 worth of milk. Another cotton product) that is now being developed is .a sugar. It is not called sugar, but it has all the appearance of sugar and is just us aweet, but it is made from cotto seed hulls. But the most important of t! new development* of* science as fn as the Georgian is voncerencd is th perfection of the process of making paper from pine pulp. Dr. Herty went ao far as to vision the Georgia of the future, so sure is he that this idea going to work out successfully. 1 pictured paper mills over the state, making news print from the pine aapling. So strong is my faith Dr. Herty, that I would adviw those of you who have pine groves to pre serve them, keep the fires out of he naturally knows their prohlc His heart bus always been close to the printing office and the only time he has been .away from the work was during the e : ght yeras he served a> Secretary of the Navy, when Mr. Wilson off.red Mr. Daniels the cabi net post, some one asked him what he was going to do about his paper, and he told them that if he had to close his newspaper, he would not •pt the place offered him by Woodrow Wilson. Th's gives you idea of how much this great man loves the press room. On Friday we were the guests of the three Atlanta newspapers at a luncheon. Mark Etheridge, the Mu- r. Telegraphs managing editor, was presiding and he described our host* perfection, according to my way of thinking. Mark said we were the guests of the probability, the possi bility and the certainty. You read story in the Georgian and it is probably true, if you find it in the Journal it is possibly true, but if you read it in the Constitution, you L * certain its tdue, fro they investi gate a story a week before publish ing it.
