Some Relief in August
July, 1930, passed into history,
with preliminary figure, it the
hottest month ever recorded.
A compilation <.f temperatures reg
istered at the larger .-tations shows
it was hotter for a longer time and
over a larger area thin in any prev
ious period since temperature record;
were established.
From July 4th to July 30th not s
single day passed without a tempera
ture of 100 or hottt. being official
ly registered at some place in the
country. This was exclusive, weath
er bureau officials say. of such
points as Phoenix ar.d \ uma, Ari
zona, where 100 u a summer com
monplace.
The ccming of August brought no
sign of relief from the crop-devastat
ing and water supply menacing
■et a recon
for duration and extent of territory
affected.
The July hot spell was the worst
the South ever ^experienced. Fort
Smith, Ark., with seventeen days of
temperatures of 100 or higher, set
the pace for the nation. Shreveport.
La., with 13 days of century marks,
was second and Little Rock. Ark.,
ar.d Lincoln. Nth, tied for third with
eleven days each.
Displaying the traditional conser
vatism of the* weather bureau J. B.
Kiicer, chief agricultural meteorolog
ist, said predictions of amateur
"weather sharks’' that August will be
another scorcher are "a bit prema
ture.”
"August usually averages a shade
cooler than Jul>," he said "I will say
that the prospects of there being an
other spell like the recent one are,
very unlikely and ther i- some conso
lation in that."
There has been no rain for 77 days
within n 100-mile radium of Mem
phis, Tenn., where $25,000,000 crop
damage is reported. Suffering and
anguish was untold. One farmer
committed suicide when 1.000 acres
of growing corn with which he hoped
to lift his mortgages, was toppled
over by the blistering sun.
Others were forced to feed next
winter's f. elder to their live stock,
unable to find food in parched p«s-
Unleas rain comes soon in Texas
and Oklahoma, say authorities, the
cotton crop will be almost totally de-
stnyeu. The damage already is the
worst reported in years.

MARRIED WOMEN ARE
OUSTED IN CANADA
War ha* been declared again : t the
married woman who engages in any
line of business, except from neces
sity, by the government of *l«2 pro
vince of Manitoba, Canada. The
government itself is weeding all mar
ried women out of its sjrvic* and
ha? offered “certificates of honor"
to private business houses and in
dustries which do likewise.
The stc pis taken as u possible
means if relieving unemployment
conditions, which arc acute in the
province. The contention is made
(hat many married women whose hus
band-- are well able to «upport them
are working in order to obtain mon
ey for luxuries while able-bodied men
with families to guppert and many
young unmarried women arc unable
4 o obtain employmert of any kind.
The rule barring married women
is not applied in rznc* where worsen
have husbands unable to support their
families adequately and of specially
qualified women who are filling
technical pesitirns in which they
could not. easily be replaced.
