THE UN I ON-RECORDER, MILLEDGEVILLE, GA, MARCH 19. 19J1
HORSE SENSE
(Ocone* Enterprise)
A good way to start the new year
is to determine to live within your
income to curb your extravagances
anl to save something each week.
People thrive on thrift, and this
means that they work diligently and
save systematically. Every week
steal a certain sum irora your gen
erous or improvident nature. Once
upon a time you lived on less than
$20 a week. Gradually your income
increased and your outgo increased
proportionally, and here is where
you started to Mrf

a spendthrift.
Columbus, Ohio—Towing a Ply
mouth Roadster with one passengci,
Cannon Ball Baker in a Chrysler Im
perial Eight Sedan February 2 broke
the Columbus to Marietta, Ohio, rec
ord by 8 minutes and 10 seconds.
The run, which was over a new
highway connecting the two import
ant Ohio cities, was made in 1 hour,
57 1-2 minutes ,an average speed of
58.97 miles p* • hour, officially timed.
Baker's accomplishment with the
Chrysler Imperial is considered
phenomenal, both from its novelty
and the conditions under which he
Irove. The 115 1-2-mile route t>c-
ween the two cities has 303 turns,
yet the average running speed was
practically n mile a minute. The
greatest speed attained during any
portion of the run was 90 miles per
hour. The weight and general incon
venience of the Plymouth Roadster,
towed by the record tedan, held the
-peed down materially.

THE GOSSIPING HABIT
(Dawson Now.)
Of all the evils with which the
world at large has to cope today
there is, perhaps, none of greater
magnitude than gossip. Undermining
the very rrots of civilisation it has J
so ingrained itself in the minds and
heart, of the people that harm comes
where fault is not, all because of a
consuming desire on the part of
some people to talk.
We are wont to lay much of this
harmful avocation, if it may be call
ed such, to the weaker sex, but,
looking at the matter from the
standpoint of business, we would as
sert that more harm comej from
"financial gossip" than ever was ut
tered by a woman whose time is
spent in idle chatter concerning local
people and happenings.
Business have failed and deals
haw been smashed all because omc-
body thought perhaps omeone else
wasn't doing so well, financially, and
somebody told somebody else until
the person in question couldn't get
credit enough to finance a perfectly
sound project; all because of idle
conjecture on the part of the origi
nal meddler.
Let u* refrain above all else from
the unworthy habit of concerning
ourselves when our ideas are neither
helpful or desirable, and the result
will be that the world will be a bet
ter place in which to live and the
original idea of independence will be
exemplified in this country of <

AMOUNT OF TAXES PAID
The Georgia Real Estate Associa
tion has called attention to the fact
. that the citizens of Georgia pay
nearly $30,000,000 a year in taxes
to the state and nearly $70,000,000
a year to their local government, a
total of approximately $100,000,000
one-seventh of their income in pros
perous years, or on© day's work
of each week for the cost of govern
ment and office holders and neurly
all of it is paid by the owners of
property, land, homes, real estate
and tangible property. It is also
stated that the cost of government
ha. increased 053 per cent in twenty
years in this state. It can thus be
seen that if the cost of living has
decreased in the past few yean
is claimed, none of the credit for it
can he given to state and county
government.—The Monroe Adve
ti'er.
PAYING CHURCH EXPENSES
It ought not to be a difficult prob
lem for the members of any den
nation to meet the church budget,
and pay all of the expenses and
claims in full. The church u
greatest organization in the world,
and is the only one that has a firm
foundation as it is ordained of God
and is in existence to promote right
eousness, and to bring happiness to
the world.
If the members of the church have
the right conception of their rela
tionship to it. and remember that 1
they arc pledged to carry on
work, and determine to be regular
*" attendance upon its services and
*y*tem^tic in paying all financial
problems of the church will he solved.
The church and its mission in the
world are worth making sacrifices
