WELCOME TO THE FIFTH
BANKERS
The four Milledgeville banks will
be host to the representatives of the
banks of the Fifth District today
at their regular annual convention
and the Union-Recorder extends to
this group on behalf of the people
of this city a most cordial welcome
to the best city in Georgia.
The same type of hospitality that
ha.* always characterized Milledge
ville will be extended this group of
financiers. They will be accorded all
the privileges of our city and it is
the hope that their visit here will
»ut only be a most profitable one,
but a most enjoyable one.
THE NEW CITY HOSPITAL
One of the most outstanding ac
complishments toward the prosperity
of this community has been the
completion of the city hospital that
is now open to the people of central
Georgia.
The genius and ingenuity of Dr.
Richard Binion and Dr. W. M. Scott
have »made this accomplishment
possible. The vision and forsight
of these two able physicians have
placed at the command of the peo
ple of Central Georgia one of the
finest and
the
Recent years Lave seen many
[marked changes in the institution
that have all led toward making it as
near profitable to the state ns it
j»o«sibly could be. The majority of
the prisoners have been those who. m
were crippled or physically unfit -
for road work and thus were nothing
to brag about as field hands. Th«y
have been given tasks that they
could best perform. Flower and
vegetable gardens have been fixed
for the cripples. Raising chickens has
Leen one of the more recent jobs to
be given prisoner* while breeding
quail and other wild life ha* also
been a new project. Other improve
ments have been instituted so that
the type of prisoners sent to the
farm could be given some occupation
that would help support the institu
tion.
There are many other improve
ments that can be made to make the
present farm profitable to the state.
Auto t*gs are already being manu
factured and it would certainly be
advantageous to the highway depart-
and a saving to the state to
the road signs and culvert pipe
manufactured there also. To indus
trialize the present farm would be
step. Regardless of where the
rison is located, the cripples
and physically unfit will be of no
more sen-ice on a farm there -than
they’ have been here.
It does not set4n to us that it
would be wise economy to scuttcr
the penal institutions all over Geor
gia. While the new farm will be
purchased by the committee, it
should be kept in mind that a part
of the problems that has always con
fronted the state will still be un
solved. Trying to fnrm* with a
Lunch of unfit men is not a possi-
plans must be worked
take care of the type of prv-
that are already at the Ftato
Fnrm.
The prison problem Is one that
cannot be solved over night and
merely the purchasing of another
farm wall not entirely solve it. For a
number of years, an effort has been
made to operate the farm with pris
oners that were in the majority
fit for this kind of work while the
able bodied men were working the
highways.
The committee should go
thoroughly into the problems in front
of them and work it out to the best
interest of Georgia. We feel
that the/ will find in Judge Dunna
way and his co-workers a .ready
spirit to help them in their task.
