TALMADGE CUTS STATE
TAX RATE TWEMTY P. C.
Makes Effort to Lighten Isrdss by
Million Dollar* on Taxpayers.
By one stroke ot hit pen Gover
nor Talmadge boosted to 14,000,000
the estimated annual savings to tax
payers of Georgia Wednesday by
trimming the state advalorem or
property tax rate from five to four
mills. In making the reduction the
governor is quoted as saying:
“Taxes have got to come down,
and I am trying to bring them down.
I hope counties and municipalities
will make a similar cut. I have just
ordered a 20 per cent cut ih the
advalorem tax rate for the state.”
Under Georgia laws the atate’s
property tax rate minimum is five
mills. Last year the advalorem taxes
brought in $5,462,176.76.
The chief executive estimated the
saving at ”a million dollars.” The
cut is effective on 1933 state prop
erty tax, due in December.
Shortly after the legislature ad
journed this spring without having
cut the price of automobile license
tags, se) urged repeatedly by the
governor, he ordered the price of
nil motor vehicle tagi reduced. The
tax rate cut is the second made by
Gov. Talmadge since his inception
into office.
The estimated savings in taxes
will be of much benefit to taxpayers
thruout the state, and the cat is re
garded as thnely. The governor acted
on the tame authority he used in
cutting automobile tag prices to $8.
