CEORG1A NEGRO PLOWS UP
FORTUNE IN OLD SPANISH
COINS NEAR ELBERTON
Elberton, ,Ca—An Elbert county
negro farmer war busy tilling hit
.-oil one morning recently when sud
denly hi- work was retarded by his
plow hitting something which made
a rattling nnisc. The negro stopped
his woik and commenced to dig into
“Mother Enrth.” To his joy
amazement he uncovered gold. Not
a pot of i,. but a nice pile of gold
Spanish coins. After the find was
gathered together and taken to the
house very secretively the negro pol-
i-hod each gold piece and wisely de
cided the bank was the only safe
place for his treasure.
The coins date to the revolution
ary period. Tales had been afloat for
year.- that gold had been buried some
where on this old place, but like most
tale- „f this nature it was not ac
cepted in a serious manner. After
-■■t negro's luck in finding the gold
extra help was secured on the farm
and every acre of land is being turn
ed over in search of more gold.
From the collector’s viewpoint the
A Wilkinton county farmer, who
-es about half way between Dub
lin and Irwintoa, has not planted
any cotton on his farm for the past
eleven years. lie gives his entire
attention to raising beef cattle,
hogs, sheep, goats and chickens,
does not owe a dime to anybody
and has everything he wants in the
greatest abundance. He lets some of
nis neighbors have milch cows for

fields during the fall and winter,

all of the gathering. He sells choice
beeves, hogs, sheep, goatt and . flick-
ms all during the year and thus

and keeps a snug bank account. |
This farmc i s seventy-eight years
old and his wife is seventy-flour.
They keep open house throughout

abundance of good things to cat on
their dining table. They have demon
strated the fact that cotton is not
absolutely necessary for prosperity
in Georgia.

Three million meals at 1 cent each
Such is the record set by the At
lanta community relief center since
;; was established ; n November, 1931
as a temporary arrangement to core
for the city's needy.
Records of the relief center show
the number of meals served during
July of this year was actually the
lb west since the first month the
center was operated. In November,
1931, a total of 106,165 meals were
served while the number for July
this year was 110,963.
An analysis of 305 men who ap
plied for meals at the relief center
during a recent week showed that
66 per cent them were able-bodied
men; 20 per cent aged and Infirm;
1C per cent cripples and only 5 per
cent that could be classed as pro
fessional bums.
So successful has been the opera
tion of the relief center as a depres-
measure it has become an institu
tion, says Frank Beck, chairman of
the relief commission, and it fills
such a vital need that it may become
permanent.
After pointing out the record of
preparing “md serving more than
three million meals at an average
cost of a penny each, Mr. Berk
sighed os he referred to the ad
vancing price of groceries.
“Our record has attracted atten
tion all over the country.” he said,
“and I'm getting letter* asking how
we do it. Here’s the answer; Com
petent supervision, careful buying,
co-operative spirit of the bakers and
others and the willingness of thoee
who eat to work for their meals.”
Every day many of the center'i
‘‘boarders” work in the kitchen,
helping to prepare meals, wash dishes
and scrub floors. It is a rare thing
foi one to refuse to work.”
