Government Engineer Here To
Discuss Improvement of Airport

Funds have been provided through
the Civil Works Adirfnistration to
imporwe airports in municipalities.

Mr. McCormick said the C. W. A.

for the work. Eighty per cent must
be spent for labor. Milledgeville is
on a direct air lino from Atlanta
to Brunwick and when the field is
improved it will probably mean that
air services will be made available to
this city.

President Roosevelt placed his ap
proval on the application for a loan
from the Board of Regents for more
than three million dollars to be spent
on new buildings and repairs at col
leges in the university system. Con-
grersman Carl Vinson advised The
Unipn-Recorder of the President’s
action last Friday.
The Regents plan to spend $292,-
000 of the fund received from the
Public Works Administration on the
construction of two buildings and in
making improvements on other
buildings at G. S. C. W. Dr. J- L.
Beeson said that plans for a faculty
apartment costing above a hundred
thousand dollars and a gymnasium
with swimming pool in the basement
had been approved. Construction of
these buildings will be storied early
in the new year for completion be
fore the next school term begins.
The new apartment house will
face Montgomery street on the north
campus and will be located between
!he Paries Memorial Hospital and
, the Peabody High School building
The design and architecture will ho

Ten additional projects have been
sent to state headquarters for ap
proval by the local Civil Works Ad
ministration, S. D. Stembridge, di
rector, and approval is expected
during the week and work will be
started immefi'ately after Christmas.
Included in the projects asked for
approval is the hard surfacing the
road from the hospital avenue to
Allen’s Invalid Home. This project
will provide employment for a large
number of people. This road will be
graded and a crushed rock base will
be laid. The county will furnish the
material and the machinery to do
the work.
Also included in the new projects
is paving for the G. M. C. campus.
This will include the side walks and
the roads. The local authorities have
urged especially that these projects
be approved for immediate work.

Mr. Stembridge said that the
projects had been sent to Atlanta and
he believed they would he immediate,

Judge B. H. Dunaway, superinten
dent of the State prison near here,
is recovering from injuries he re
ceived last Thurnjpy night, when
two convicts he was transporting
back to the prison, beat him, took
his car and forced him to accom
pany them back to Atlanta where
he escaped wnile the prisoners were
hold’ng up another car to make their
get-away.
Judge Dunaway was overpowered
near Madison late Thursday after
noon while enroute back to the farm
with T. B. Burma, Durant Shadix
Evans, all escaped convicts.
Evans did not take part in toe at

Mr. Andrews has bees indentified

Farmers of Baldwin county who
plowed up cotton last spring and
took options on 'fcotton at s x cents
per pound will sign the nece-sary
papers this week to have the cotton
d -iivered to them in the form of a
receipt from the Agricultural Ai
justment Administration.
The blanks have been received this
week by Farm Agent Langley and
will be distributed to the farmers.
Many of the fanners of the county
who agreed to plow up cotton took
opfons on cotton at six cents pet-
pound in payment for the acres plow
ed up- TheJjlanks that will be signed
this week will give the fanner the
right to authorize Secretory Wallace
to sell this cotton and send them
checks in payment, or they may
hold the cotton and borrow ten cents
per pound on it. There will be sev
eral thousand dollars worth of
options signed.
The new blanks for 1934 reduc-
t : ons have been received. The farm
ers will reduce their cotton a cer
tain percent based on a five year
average. Public meetings will he
held throughout the county to ex

Judge Dunaway came hack to his
home Friday morning and was con
fined to his bed for several days re
covering from toe injuries. Several
teeth were knocked out and his head
and face were badly bruised and
lacerated.
Mrs. Dunaway was notified that
Judge Dunaway was in an accident

Roland Lawrence, Deputy Sheriff
of Baldwin County, said Wednesday
that he had not been officially noti
fied of the proposed change ta the
superintendent’s office at the State
Prison Farm, as reported in the daily
papers Wednesday. The story stated
that Judge B. H- Dunaway would
be transferred to the new prison at
Reidsviile, and would be succeeded
by Mr. Lawrence.
The riiumor has been abroad for
several weeks that a change would
be made at the prison, but no defi
nite announcement has yet been
made. M)r. Lawtoifce will ta the
choice as Judge Dunaway’s succes
sor, is certain, and the announcement
of the change, which will become
effective early in January, ia expect
ed daily.

Coach Butts has not said what de
cision had been reached or whether

Wallace Butts has made a splen
did record as a coach since graduat
ing at Mercer, where he was a star
for four years. His first job was at
Madison and he coached a G. I. A.
A. and southern championship team

RED CROSS TO PROVIDE
FOR POOR ON CHRISTMAS
Plans are being made by Miss
Emy B lev. head of the Red Cross
rtnef offices, to provide for the
poor of the county on Christmas
day. There arc now ninety families
on tho relief roll who are receiving
benefit from the Red Cross fund.
Food and clothing will be provided
and toys for the children in the
destitute families.

this city on January 1st for the prac

C. E. Smith, head of the un
employed offiee in this county,
has been advised by Connell-
Young, Macon contractors, who
were low bidders to build the new
bridge over the Oconee river, that
they will want a large number of
workmen early fn January. The
number that will be employed u
not stated but both skilled and un-

will award the contract within the
