The more feverish the preparation
becomes for the war nobody wants
♦he more glib statesmen become in
high-sounding pacific utterances
Normally, it would be news if Ja
pan wanted war with America or if
Germany wanted to annex Austria.
But today it is headline news if Ja-
panae statesmen say they don’t want
war, if Hitler says he has no designs
on Austria, or if France offers to
reduce her armanenta. It all looks
like a last tninute rush of statesmen
to get themselves on record as fav
oring peace before the next war
breaks out, in the hope that his
torians of the future will not blame
them for it.
