TIM ACRES OF FARM
LAND HAS VAMOOSED
AUuh Fiimt Put*l«J By Sialnai
•f Laud. Explanation Offarci
Lost, airmyed, or stolen, ten acres
of rood farm land, believe it or not.
T. H Row, n farmer livinr near
Choccoloceo, Ala., is—or was—the
owner of toe wandorinr acres. He
planted hi* cotton crop in rood solid
ground, and f'rtired that the wea'h-
er and the boll weevils were the only
factors with which he would have
to gamble in order to reap a rood
crop, but he erred, for ’Mother Na
ture had an ace in the hole, >
gnak.
A few night* aro a neighbor.
John Weaver, came into Row' homo
with the report that ten acres
Bom* land, adjacent to Weaver's,
had drowned from sight into the
ho. «*■ of the earth.
Weaver mid he had been standing
in an adjacent Held. Suddenly the
ground trembled and rumbled
neath .him. Bushes and tree# * ook
and a roar like that of an appnmch
ing cyclone came from the ten-acre
tract. A rust of air “whooshed” from
the ne««hboring field and Wea'
left Uw vWnity.
later he investigated and discov
ered that the ipet where Roes’ cot
ton ereo had grown was pock mark
ed w**h girantic water filled holes.

PennV living three miles from the
Mcene reported hearing the noise as
the land d ; «*oi>e*red. but said there
was no earthquake. Speculation has
run remnant in the community as to
the cause of the vanishing of the
land
W. L. Rhodes, who live* about two
m ilr« *rem the snot, has offered
plausible explanation. He said that
when * well was recently drilled in
hs-k yard, the drill apparently
struck an open spsce about twenty-
five feet down. When the instru-
tnr.pt WM lowered several feet it
rfrurlc water, which frequently be
comes muddy. He believes toe «ame

Rci^en** of the district plan to

If Uncle Sam e-rer put* all of the
nation’s money gold into one pile in
the treasury building, in Washing
ton, it isn’t likely he’ll lose it to rob
bers. He’s building hhnself a safe
which even the best safe designers
could not “crack” in lean than three
days if somebody lost the combina
tion.
It is a g*‘ant two-story vault of
concrete, steel and hard east iron,
which, it is believed, no known tool
can pierce and no known toreh can
melt. With more than twice the
money storage capacity of the old
vault it is replacing, it is being con
structed secretly and underground
with'n the north court of the vener
able treasury department building.
If anybody loot the combination it
would take Area days to penetrate to
its Insides, and in the process a aeries
of alarms and signals would be set

The vault will cost 9334.000 and
when finished will have taken six
teen month* to build. The vault will
extend 21 feet, two stories below
street level, and a one-story office
building will he buUt on top of it
It will serve a* an “ageing cellar'’
for new paper money as well as
treasure chest. It takes six months
for the ink on new currency to drv
completely, it is explained. The old
vault d : d not have space enough to

The specially hardened iron on the
outride of the vault’s wall*, which

tough that after It Is cast no holes
n he bored in it, nor can it he
shaped or cut. So all the hole*,
snecial fitt'ng* and shapes were cast
when toe Iron slab was made readv
to fit in place.
The vault will contain 12 275
of reinforced concrete and 3.540
tons of cast iron and steel.

GETTING GOVERNMENT LOANS

Although the office of Hines and
Carpenter, local attorney* for the
Home Owners Loan Corporation, has
been literally swamped with applica
tions for loans, only a few have been
approved, the proverbial “red tape’
making the process tedious and long
drawn out. Several loan* are in pro
cess of being closed, with probable
approval in the near future.
All loans granted up to date have
been in government bonds, the mort-
agees having agreed to accept Home
Owners Loan Corporation bonds. The
bonds, which have not been valued
below £0 cents cn the dollar, are
quoted this week at 98 cents on the
