“It is hard to believe that no sur

the wild life population. We have
no definite figures to show the ap
proximate size of any group of our
animals. Kor do we know how many
are killed every year by the bunt-

would show "what we are taking
and what we should take in order
to leave sufficient numbers for
breeding and replacements.”
Is Counting Ducks
The data obtained would show
the status everv species of wild life
and would establish which animals
should have more protection from
hunters. The census, he said, could
be taken in every slate within six
months.
Much of the opposition to the kill
ing of certain animals is purely
“sentimental.” Darling says, "For*
instance. I am convinced we have
more elk than we have any use for.
year the Jackson Hole herd,
in northern Wyoming, numbered 2.-
R00 more than we could feed, even
though hunters killed 2.000."
Darling said his department Is
working on a national survey of
ducks now and will be able to say
approximately how many ducks
were killed last season, as well as
to estimate the present duck popu
lation. This data was gathered
through sale of duck stamps to hunt
er through the national post offices.
