cine in Baldwin county. Also those
who are buried here:
Dr Henry Daw— Alien
Dr. Henry Dawson Allen was
bom in Hancock county Georgia
1856. but moved to Baldwin county
Georgia in early manhood. He gradu
ated from Atlanta medical college,
and began the practice of his pro
fession in East Baldwin—Practicing
there for twelve years—In 1890 he
bought the old Oglethorpe University
property in Midway. On the site of
this University he established a
Sanitarium for the care and treat
ment of nervous and mental deseases
known as Allen's Invalid Home. The
first private institution of this kind
south of the Ohio river. He remain
ed head of the institution until his
death March 22. 1930.
Dr. John Pepper Atkinson
Dr. John Pepper Atkinson was the
the son o! Gov. William Y. Atkinson.
Bom in Newr.an, Ga. He graduated
from Atlanta Medical College. He was
the physician for the State Farm and
practiced medicine in Milledgeville
for a number of years, is buried at
at Newnan. Georgia.
Dr. Charles Henry Base
Dr. Charles Henry Bass was bom
in Hancock County. Georgia. Feb. 2.
1830. His father died when he was
four years old and his mother moved
to Sparta. Ga. He graduated at Au
gusta Medical College, and com
menced the practice of med'eine at
Marietta. Ga. In 1856 he was elected
assistant physician at the State Sani
tarium Dr. Bass joined the Artillery
Co. Dr. Beck in command and he
was elected surgeon of the Co. In
the fall of 1862 he moved to Cobb
county Georgia. Then in 1872 he
came back to the State Sanitarium.
He was re -elected assistant physician
of the Sanitarium and remained there
till his death in 1872.
Dr. Joseph E. Blount
Dr. Joseph E. Blount died Sept.
20. 1879 the age of 55 years. He is
buried pn the square of Peter J.
Williams. Dv. G. B. Beecher was a
soldier of the Cori.'ederate Army, lie
was in company A. Phillips Legion
Cavalary. Died
Dr. George L Chapman
Dr. George L. Chapman was bom
in Milledgeville and attended school
here in childhood. He graduated
from Atlanta College for Physicians
and Surgeons. His practice of medi
cine was began in Dublin. Georgia.
From there, he moved to Rockyford.
He came to Milledgeville to practice
and remained until his death 1923.
Dr. Guy DavM C—lw
Dr. Guy David Compton graduat
ed from Baltimore College for Physi
cians and Surgeons. He practiced
medicine in Claybom Texas, then
Okla. He then went to Mazaland.
Mexico, from there he went on a
Coastwide steamer from Alaska to
South America. Dr. Compton came
Milledgeville and was the State
Prison Farm Physician until hip
death.

Dr. Hall was a Trustee of the
Georgia State Sanitarium for many

Dr. Harper was bom November
15. 1825 in Darvills. Dinwiddle
County Virginia and was the son of
Dr. Peteruon W. Harper. He moved
to Baldwin County- Meriwether dis
trict in 1843 and practiced med
icine. For a number of years he lived
in the old Jordan home or •West-
over” He died February 16. 1882.
Dr. Iverson Louis Harris
Dr. Harris was bom in 1835. He
attended Jefferson Medical College
where he received his M. D. degree.
He was a surgeon in the Confederate
Army. 59th Georgia Regiment.
Dr. Harris practiced medicine in
P.lountsville. Georgia and then in
Milledgeville. He was the surgeon
fer the Central cf Georgia Railroad.

Dr I ^khart was bom October
5. 1849. He’graduated from Augusta.
Geer • a Medical College in 1860. He
entered the Confederate Army after
. graduation. He had charge of Stout
j Hospital in Milledgeville. After the
’ war he practiced medicine in Mil-
Icdgcville for thirty years, then went
to Birmingham and died there.
Dr. George Mitchell
Dr. Mitchell wa». the son of Gov.
Mitchell. He practiced medicine in
Milledgeville for a long time and he
is buried in the city cemetery.
Dr. W. A. Moore
Dr Moore graduated in medicine
in 1860 at the University of Georgia
Medical College at Augusta, in the
class with D.*. Lockhart.
Dr. Moore went to practice in
Greene County and then came
Milledgeville. He is buried
Green County. Miss Julia Moore
daughter and Mrs. Jesse Bone
is his grand-daughter.

bom on Sept. 18. 1869. He came to
Milledgeville iron Sasser. Georgia.

State Farm. His wife was Emily
Burrell Dozier who was matron at
S. C. W. for a number of years.
Died June 24. 1904.

Dr. William A. Ellison was bom

attended Ga. Military College and
then went to Baltimore for his de
cree in medicine. For a number of

Dr. Jas. D. Erwin was bom at

in Baldwin County. June 29. 1898.

Dr. Tomlinson Fort was bom in
Warren county. Georgia in July 14.
1787. Graduated at Univorsitv
Penn., medical college in Philadel-
nhia. At the age of 22. he began
practice of medicine ir. Milledgeville.
Having organized his own company
th" Baldwin Volunteers, lie served
in the w nr of 1812. and was wound
ed in Florida at battle of "Twelve
Miles Swamp”. For the next flfr
years he suffered at intervals from
n musket shot in the leg. When nr
70 years d' age. without anaesthesia,

attended the local schools and then
graduated in medicine at Philadel
phia. Pennsylvania. He graduated
with credit to himself and shortly
after that consummation of his am
bition. he sought and obtained the
oost of Past Assistant Surgeon in
the United States Navy, although at
that time he was not of legal age
for admission to the service. Ex
ception was made in his case be
cause cf his unusual talents and
training.
Dr. Herty was assigned to foreign
service and visited many European
•runtries. Later he saw duty of." the
West Coast of Africa where th~ “San

for slaves. Dr. Hertv then cam
Milledgeville and offered his

the navy as surgeon until the col-

After the war he returned to Mil-

practitioner. He was mayor of the

1874. On December 21. 1876. he
died at the age of 38 years.

Doctor Nathaniel Pierce Walker
Doctor Walker was bom in Put-
im County Georgia March 21, 1876.
He graduated from Emory Univer
sity with an M. D. Degree. He was
Clinical Director at the Georgia
State Hospital here for years and
until his death on November 20,
1933. He served as a physician on
the medical staff of the Georgia
State Hospital for 32 years.

Private Cadets at the age of nine
teen. He was severely wounded
while serving with Terrell’s Artillery
an# this was during the defense of
Savannah. He was captured and held
as a prisoner until the close of the
war. After graduating from the Au
gusta Medical School, he lived at his
father's home in East Baldwin Coun
ty where he practiced medicine for
several years. He was married
Miss Mary Leonard of Columbus,
Georgia. •
Doctor Benjamin Asp Inwall White

Troops. He was the eldest
Major Edward White of Revolution
ary War fame. He graduated from
Harvard with the decree of Master
of Arts, and from the University of
Pennsylvania with the degree of
Doctor of Medicine. He married Miss
Jane Eleanor De Clensie. Their
home Brooklyne was on a plantation
in Jones County where he practic
ed medicine and became most skill
ful in his art as well as being a
very successful planter. After
ing actively throughout the Civil War
he died in Milledgeville at the age
of 73.
Doctor Sam G. White
Dr. White was the fourth son of
Doctor Benjamin White. He was
bom in Milledgeville about 1825.
His education was obtained at Ogle
thorpe University, the University of
Pennsylvania, and at some Univer
sity in France. He was a Surgeon in
the G. S. A. Army, and during the
war had charge of the hospital at
Richmond, Virginia. He was at one
time the Mayor of Milledgeville. He
died May 16. 1877.
