The edition was inspir ed by the recent completion of the Old Capital Bridge across the Oconee at Milledgeville. The period covered is from 1804. when Milledgeville with a few log houses was designated as state capi tal. to 1868, when the last session of the legislature was held here. There will be a section of general stories on the glories of the old scat cf government: its prominent figures that were of national importance— such as William H. Funeral services w day afternoon at the Nunn & Wheel er church for Lewis Levi Smith, prominent Wilkinson county farmer, who died late Monday afternoon. Mr. Smith suffered a stroke cf appoplexy several day alting action dur ing the next few weeks. The money pledged represents funds for a num ber o.’ new homes and a great num ber o’ modernization for Mlllcdge- ville. The pledges also represent a number of loans to refinance present mortgages. DAVE HOWARD BURBMGNDAY Former Resident of This City Died Suddenly Saturday Afternoon at His Home in Dearing, Ga. Funeral services were held Mon day afternoon at the First Baptist church for Mr. Jamas D. Howard, who died suddenly at his home in Dearing on Saturday afternoon. A large gathering of friends and relatives were present to pay tribute to a man that was prominent in the •social, religious, business and pro- fc'sii .nil life of this community for mere than forty years. Rev. James M. Tercsi. pastor of the church, had charge of the services. A prayer was said by Rev. A. G. Harrir. rtf the Presbyterian church and the eulogy was delivered by Mr. Joe Moore a life long friend of the deceased Mr. Moore told of Mr. Howard’s love for his friends and the church. He related how he had done so much for the building of God's kingdom on this earth and had given his life unselfishly for others. He had ex pressed the desire that Mr. Moore conduct the service. Following his graduation he studied law at Mercer and when he had received his degree he came to Milledgeville to make his home. He married Miss Annie Barksdale shortly after coming back to Mil- Icdgcvillc and they had enjoyed a happy union until last year when Mrs. Howard passed away. M»*. Howard was active in the affairs o’ the community and played an important part in building Milledge ville. He served the county in the state legislature and was both judge and solicitor of the county court. He managed the campaign of Con gressman Carl Vinson in fffs first race for congress and again entered politics when ho handled the cam paign of Judge Jrc Pottle in his race • Governor. Work will com mence almost simultaneously on the jail building on the lot recently purchased by the county on Mont gomery street. The commissioners at a special scs- ion Wednesday rented the Arm strong house on the corner of Wayne and Montgomery streets, and Sheriff Haynic and his family will move immediately *nto this house. Misde meanor prisoners will be roused at the county convict camp and felony risoners will be taken to Macon or rwinton, the commissioners s*ud. Veterans and Bona Con solidated Into One Organisation. A joint organization of the United Confederate Veterans and the Sons cf Veterans was perfected at a meet ing held at the Court House on last Friday. Memorial Day. It was decided to unite the two erganizations due to the thinning ranks of veterans. Only two veterans were present at the meeting. Judge B. C. Ward and Mr. Jesse Taylor. Judge Ward was named Comman der of the camp. Mr. J. R. Torrance, Vice-Commander and Jere N. Moore, adjutant. The meeting passed resolutions expressing regrets that Mr. T. J. Howard and Mr. M. O. McMullen were unable to owend. They also passed a * resolution expressing re grets that Mr. R. B. Moore, who served as adjutant for Camp Doles for many years, was not able to at tend the meeting, the first he has issed in many years. Mr. Darden Asbury and Mr. Otto Conn were named delegates to the general convention in Armarillo. Texas in Octeber. Judge Ward and Mr. Taylor were named delegates to the state convention to be held, In Atlanta this month and money was appropriated to give these old vet- ans the trip.
