Hen. Abit Nix. cf Athens,
i the i
i-monthly meet
ing of the Kiwanis Club cn last ■
Thursday and at the conclusion the
elub gave a rising vote of thanks at
the suggestion ol Rev. James M.
Tfcresi. who described the address as
the finest he had heard in many
years.
Mr. Nix was introduced by Jerc
N. Moore. He told of the history d*
civic clubs and then related the
many opportunities for service of
fered to the clubs that were now in
almost e very city in the world. He
related the good work done by Geor
gia clubs in the rehabilitation of un
der privileged children. His address
was an appeal for leadership by the
Kiwanift in real community service.)
Prer.'dent Joe Andrews and W. H.j
Arnall were named delegates to t*- j
national convention to be held in,
San Antionio Texas on May 19 to 22. 1
Dr. Francis Daniels and Charlie
Chandler were named alternates. j
A resolution expressing apprecia
tion to Rev. A. G. Harris and Father
McNamara for bringing the Passion I
Play to Milledgeville was unamious- .
lv adooted. A class from G. C. W...
Miss Belle Burch, tc achcr. were i
guests of the club at the meeting.
Cancer of The Digestive Traci
The digestive fact is made up of
many divisions, all developed from
one primitive tube. However, the
three divisions mort concerned in the
preparation of the food for the nutri
tion of the body tissues are the stom- ,
ach. liver, and pancreas. It is in th?se.
that more than one-third of all can- J
cers are located.
The liver is rarely the seat of
primary cancer, but is a favorite
site for secondary growths that have
migrated' from some primary' focus.
The pancreas, on the other hind, is
often the seat of primacy cancer, but
rarely of a recondary growth. This
leaves the stomach to harbor the
vast majority of cancers of the di
gestive tract: a fortunate fact for
cancers of the stomach can r*'ten be
cured: those located in the liver or
pancreas are practically hopeless
from the beginning. i
In 1920. 386 deaths from cancer!
of the stomach and its immediate
environ were reoorted to the Georgia I
State Board of Vital Statistics. Thlr- i
teen years later, in 1933. there were I
616 deaths reported, an increase of
37.5 per cent although the population
of the state had increased I^ss than
one per cent.
The symptoms of cancer of the
stomach are so insidious that the dis
ease is usually well advanced be
fore it is recognized. We can not
account for the fact that symptoms
of cancer of the stomach are not con
tinuous. They are strangely inter
mittent with the tragic result that
the first definite symptoms are pres
ent only when the dsiease has pro
gressed far beyond the hope o'.' cure.
Noah was a hundred years building
the ark. During that time he often
warred the people of the approach
ing calamity. Cancer of the stomach
likewise gives us warnings, but not
with sufficient vigor to command
our serious attention. We should re
member that nearly three-fourths of
nil eanrers of the stomach occur be
tween the ages of forty-four and
.vhor
of these are in men.

If the entient lias not already se
lected a family medical adviser, he
should do so and should consult him
immediately. The doctor should go
carefully into the history, make a
careful examination of the chest and
abdomen, and then resort to some
of the well known methods of pre
cision examination of the blood and
the stomach content. Last, but most
important, an x-ray study should be

the location and extent of the lesion. >
