Hines in r most able manner on
“Gen. James Jackson”. She gave
an account e.f his life from the time
ho was bom in England Sept. 21st,
1757. dwelling particularly on the
part he took in connection with the
yazoo fraud.
Mrs. Hines said “The Georgia
Legislature in 1795 sold to a combi
nation of land companies, a vast
tract of western land owned by the
stale, thirty-five million acres, for
the nominal sum of $500,000. It was
soon found that the members of the
legislature had been bribed, and the
next year the anti-yazoo party con-
tr ilcd the legislature and revoked
•ne sale. Young James Jackson, then
Senator, resigned his seat and came
home to aid in the defeat of this
corrupt conspiracy, known as the
Yazoo Act. Many claims then
*pmnn up, and the matter was re
ferred to Congress, as the Georgia
lands were afterward ceded to the
Union. The matter was not settled
until IS 10. when the Supreme Court
decided that the original fraud

that the Constitution forbids a sale
