Father McNamara Praises Hu
manitarian Efforts of President
In response to a letl
President RoosevHt, Father T. J. Me
Namara praised the praaident for
his humanitarian efforts in behalf
of the “Forfotten Man" and an
insite into the conditions at the New
Deal program in this county.
Father McNamara, who has long
been active in social welfare work
in this county, received the letter
from the president last week r~
mailed his answer Tuesday.
The letter from the president
as follows:
September S3. MM.
Reverend T. James McNamara
MiUedgeviUe. Georgia
Reverend and dear Sir:
Your high calling bring* you into
intimate daily contact no* only with
your own parishiooers. but with
people generally in your community
am sure you see the problems <■
your people with wise and sympa
thetic understanding.
Because of the grave responsibil
ity of my office. I am turning to
representative CTergyinen tar coun
cil and advice,—feeling amfident
that no group can give more accu
rate and unbiased views.
I am particularly anxious that the
new Social Security Legislation Just
enacted, for which we have worked
so long, providing for old age pen
sions, aid for crippled children, and
unemployment insurance, shall be
carried out in keeping with the high
purposes with which this law was
enacted. It is also vitally important
that the Works Program shall be ad
ministered to provide employment
ot useful work, and that our unem
ployed as well as the nation as a
whole may derive the greatest pos
sible benefits.
I shall deem it a favor if you will
write mi. about conditions in your
community. Tell me where you feel
our government can better serve the
people.
We can solve our many problems,
but no man or single group can do
it—we shall have to work together
for the common end otf better spir
itual and material conditions for the
American people.
May I have your counsel and
your help? I am leaving on a short
vacation but will be back in Wash
ington in a few weeks, and I will
deeply appreciate your writing to
Very sincerely yours.
FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT.
The following is Father McNa
mara’s answer:
The Honorable
Franklin D. Rooaevelt,
President of the United States of
America,
Washington. I>. C.
Honorable and dear Sir:
Your letter of September S3 is
other clear indication, as are
enactments already achieved, of the
thought and the trend of your mind.
Lesser prophets, who have suddenly
become vocal with the demonstrable
emergence from economic stress
made possible by your inspiring pro
gram, would have us believe your
program is socialistic and that your
irnnd is in that direction. They fall
to distinguish between serial and
socialistic; between human rights
and property right*. I believe if I
were to attempt to sum up the
thought of the majority of our citi
zenry I would not be found wrong
in saying that wtth them your plat
form has been "THE FOSGOTTIN
MAN*' and likewise with them they
have seen your platform carried
into execution in the social legisla
tion you have caused to be enacted.
Wisely our people do nert look upon
you as a super-man but rather as
one df themselves, whose heart beats
with their hearts and In consequence
knows their sufferings snd their
aspirations. They know you have
tried valiantly to solve their prob
lems, arising out of the Depression.
They know, further, that if failure
has attended some of these ennobling
efforts the failure has been glori
ous. illuminated by the bright rays
of hope which come from a motive
that cannot be questioned.
As a result of the Social Security
Legislation, enacted at the last ses
sion of Congress, providing for old
age pensions, aid for crippled chil
dren and unemployment insurance,
/car has been dissipated and hope
has taken its place. We in Georgia
feel that it is only a matter of time
when our Slate will see fit to afford
our people the security made pos
sible by your inspiring leadership.
If I may express an opinion I would
say that the delay in effecting the
necessary, enabling legislation with-
the State will be due to a fear on
the part of our people that money
in unusual amounts will find its way
Into the hands of a section of our
population that has little or no
realization of the responsibility that
goes with money. Our problem is re
gard to this section of our popula
tion is already a moat difficult one.
There is no desire to make it even

we In the small community see it
