Bv order of the Court, ihis 6 h day of Nov 1837 48 41 WILLIAM S. GOSS. Clerk.’ TO raE CITIZENS OP RAITUOIiFU COUNTY. WHEREAS, a report is and has been circula ting. throughout Randolph county, that Jona than Williams and myself. Lemuel Webb, have been engaged together in swindling L. B. Camp out of a certain bond, made bv John Devcnport to William Alorris, calling for lot of land No. 10, in the 9th district, first section, now Randolph county , which circulating report I feel myself authorised and bound, from duty, to contradict. But 1 shall be moderate in so doing • and will only state facts which will be a sufficient con tradiction. In June, or thereabout, last, Mr. Camp made oath that. Jonathan Williams, with one Lemuel AVebb, bad tried to swindle him (Camp) out of bis just and equita ble title, fee simple, to lot of land No. 10. in the 9th district, &c. Williams was arrested and taken before a court.formed for that purpose. Names o r witnesses : Atuin Webb James Luggs, Islioni Philips and A brier Coleman. Coleman's testimony might have been termed neutral. Philips stated, oil oath, that be knew nothing against “Will ams ; (not sworn to sav any thing about Lemuel Webb) but turned himself—his right hand partly lifted, pom'in? towards me, and with” a trembling band, bis knees sinking, his countenance tell ing the feelings of a guilty sou!—offered the most scan dalous report. 1 ro.-v Irom mv seat and went towards him—his band fell, an” he exclaimed, mv life is in votir hands. Sirs, enough *o think—l sav but little. ! The o'her testimony was in -Williams’ favor, and also the confession ofOamo wi'h his-(Camp's) oa ! h. This the court knows tube the fact; but Williams was sent to jail. Further statements: In September. 1836 T was at Mr Williams’. lie relate! t 0 me the manner in which Mr. Ct trip had bought his land. In relating the whole routine of circumstances, I suspected that there was fraud of the darkest kind ; and held a conversation with Williams, but not on a plan of swindling vet to detect a f :nd ; and between the s'h and 10 b of Octo ber. 1830 Sarah Webb (mv wife) bought said bond $550 —writing sufficient t( show the fact of the trade! The bond was not present a‘ the time, neither did nor could she get hold of it for some time af'er , hut even tually got hold cf if in terms c(f the contract. M r . I Camp, sotne'inii’ after, agreed to pav Williams for his labor, providing that Williams would give him peacea ble possession. Many months after, for the first time. I beard Mr. Camp say that the bond was his, .(knowing in whose hands the bond was.) demanded of Williams the bond, yet owned immediate’y after that the bond was for Wil liams to do what he p eased with. This acknowledg ment I heard. Air. Camp stated to Ales-srs. C and A , that he had no use for the bo d—that it was no account—he would not give any thing for it, &c. Ha (Camp) also slated to Sand W the same in subs ance, and almost in word. lie (Camp) also stated to J the same ; and further, that, he had rather have a piece of blank paper, for it ; would do to write on. and the bond would not—that the 1 bond was no account £cc.; and to many others he has chatted hi the same way. The foregoing are facts.— j l now ask if Williams and 1 have swindled Camp m ] any shape or form ? Aly w ife bought the bond from Williams—has since paid to Davenport the amount of money which he (Davenport) first sold the bond for; which money, he sai I. had never been paid by the first purchaser, Wm. Alorris. and has the only good title that, ever was made. Now 1 ask whose land it is ? Sarah’and I made rt contract, before marriage, and she hasher trustee. If C.:mp lias been awkward, she is not to blame. Now Camp enieman-!ike, should give tip the bond, and in future have better luck ; and never fall out with a silly woman because ri'.e acted wite'y : pro tern. Aly follow citizens.
