REMARKS.
In a neighborhood in Alabama, about 20 miles south
■west of Columbus, the searlnt fever is prevailing. In
••Jin’ families il is violent and fatal, and in other* again
more mild an 1 manageable.
We in-rVion this fact as evidence, that there is some
atmospherical tendency existing for the production of
this disease, and that parents may have a timely care
in guarding their c’rldreii from exposures to the Hid
den an 1 severe changes which max'occur during the
neason, and the damp or night air. IVJ EDICUS.

GRAND JURY PRESENTMENTS. |
The Grand Jury for October Term of the
Superior Court of Muscog-ee county, at their |
adjourned meeting in January 1*839, being;
fully impressed with the inutility of sounding i
presentments or recommendations upon sulv
jects not immediately within their jurisdiction, !
confine their action, therefore, exclusively to !
matters in relation to the interest and internal j
affairs of their immediate community.
With regret and mortification, they hear!
of the many acts of gambling, cheating, and
plundering, as well as other kinds of outrage,
with which our community is perpetually j
disgraced, which can only be suppressed by ‘
great vigilance and united action on Ihe part
of the good citizens. They, therefore, re- \
commend a public meeting of the citizens of
the Counlv s t the Court House, on the fourth
Saturday of February next, for the purpose
of adopting measures with a view to arrest
those practices, or evils, and that, public
notice be given through the public Gazettes,
and by hand bills.
We regard (be want of a suitable Court
House, as a matter of much consequence,
and. therefore recommend to the Inferior
Court the propriety of conferring with ihe j
city authorities with a view lo the erection of
a Court House and City Hall in conjunction,
as early as practicable, and that the Court ;
levy an extra lax to carry out said object.
The practice of the proprietors of confec
tionaries, as well as shop-keepers, in keeping
open house on the sabbalh, by means of back
ways, for the retailing spirituous liquors, being ;
notorious, we respectfully recommend to ihe ;
city authorities ihe necessity of a more rigid
police, and the levy of a tax upon those esla- J
hlishments to ihe extent of iheir authority.
We present Magirt Ivy for malpractice in \
office, as a Justice of the Peace, taking bail :
which was palpably insufficient, in the case
of the State, vs. Berij. Strong, charged with
larceny, See.
We presenl Frederick Wilhelm and James ‘■
Kivlin for an nffrav. on Thursday, Mst insf.
Also, the said Frederick Wilhelm for forcibly
and violently forcing open the house door of
the said James Kivlin, on Ihe same dav. and
all done in the countv of Muscogee. Wit
nesses. Y\ m- S. Chiplev. Geo. W. Martin,
and H. Hurd.
W e present John Selilevand Calvin Stmt- j
ton for an affray, on the 15th inst. in the town
ol Columbus. Witnesses, Geo. Smith, and
James Van Ness.
We respectfully recommend to the city au
thorities to remove an ailedged nuisance which
exists upon Front st. opposite the residence of
Lewis C. Allen, Esq.
The issuing of change bills, familiarly known
as shin-plasters, being likely to increase to a
pernicious extent, we recommend the dis- j
continuance of their circulation.
Before closing our presentments, we take j
lcn\ r e to congratulate the good people of this |
section of Georgia upon the prospect of hnv- i
ing constructed a Rail Road, or Canal, from
the City of Columbus to the point of the east
ern lermina lion of the state road from the
Tennessee line. We hail with high satisfac
tion the proposed issuing of cilv bonds by the
City Council of Columbus, in aid of the un
dertaking, Anew era dawns upon us; and
lie that will sustain the Council in this impor
tant measure, will advance the true interest of
Georgia, and more especially this part of it.
We add an expression of our regret that the
recent Legislature adjourned without giving
energy and life to the contemplated Internal
Improvement of our State. We hold the po
licy of loaning (he credit of the state in aid of
these important works, to be sound, and every
way commendable, and no one is entitled to
political advancement who is orthodox upon
the subject.
By information obtained from the County
Records, we present the following persons for
retailing spirits without Licence, on the first
day of January last, and at various periods.
