Ihe Republican Union party, of Harris county, met at the Court House, in Humilinn, on the .>lli in>t. agreen!>!e to previous notice, for the purpose of appointin'; Delegates to the Convention to be held in Milledgeville in May next. The meeting was organised hy appointing Col. Janies Whitten, Chau man, A. S. Huey, Secretary. The object of the meeting having liccn briefly staled by the Chairman, the followin'; preamhle and resolutions were introduced hy P. Ingram, Esq. Whereas an important crisis has arrived tn relation to the prosperity, purity and |>cr nwnency of the free and republican institu tions of ottr country —a crisis which is to lest the virtue and firmness of freemen, as well as the strength and value of our glorious Con stitution itself. Anri whereas it is the duty, as also the privilege of freemen, whenever the institutions of their common country, or their own private rights are in jeopard v t to meet together ami freciv express their sentiments upon all subjects a libeling their interests —to : watch over and scrutinise the acts of those , in power, or those who icoull be in power— to expose to public indignation, both the in dividuals and the measures that may tend to corrupt and destroy these cherished forms of j government, and to consult upon the best \ means for upholding, purifying and perpetu- ! ating the free an.l republican institutions which were bought bv the blood and treasure 1 of our fathers. Therefore, Resolved , That our Federal Government Was firmed for special objects of nalional interest, and that those objects are di-stincly defined in that Constitution fmm whence alone the General Government derives its power. Resolved , That all powers of legislation hot expressly delegated to the General Go vernment by the Constitution, are reserved to the several States, and that in giving to the Constitution a too lih -rai roast ruction, and in -assuming powers hy implication , ihnt sa cred instrument is made a dead letter , the rights of the States infringed upon, and a fearful stride taken towards a consolidated go vernment. Resolved. That the Constitution should have a strict construction, and that that in slrument gives to the General Government ho power to charter a National Bonk, to levy h protective Tariff, or to squander the pubic tnnnevs on works of Internal Improvements. Resolved. That a total separation of Banks from the General Government would he “ a consummation devoutly to he wished,” and that the hill now before Congress, generallv Known as the Stih-Trensurv bill, is well cal culated to effect that separation, and deserves the warm support of the Democracy of the Union. Resolved. I hat the present Administration, in carrying into effect the great measures it has proposed, is entitled to the co-operation of the whole Republican Party; and that their efforts should he untiring in supporting that Administration, so long as it shall redeem, in good faith, the pledges it has given for its fu ture action. Resolved Pint modern lU/ttartwt is a grand coalition of Federalism and Abolitionism —the former at war with the Constitution, nut! a foe to the best interests of the country ; the latter a mockery ot Religion, a burlesque upon phi lanthropy, and a disgrace to h inanity; and that tiiese are the elements combined tor the overthrow ol the great Republican doctrines advocated hy the present Administration. Resolved. That those who oppose the Re publican doctrines of the present Administra tion, are either directly or indirectly giving countenance and support to the several fac tions which constitute modern srhitrivn. The resolutions were ably disc ‘s><&d by Porter Ingram, F.>q. and Col. R. J. Crews, and passed unanimously. On motion of Col. R. J Crews. Shropshire, Secy. From the Montgomery Journal. BLOODY TRAGEDY. ‘ Onectf the most fataland lamentable occur rences which this community has ever been called to witness, took place in this city on Wednesday afternoon, 2Slh ultimo, in front of die Montgomery Hall. Believing that we | cannot observe too much caution in regard to undue influences upon the public mind, in trnnsa notions that are to undergo Judicial in vestigation, we shall refrain from any thing like a detail of the facts in this case. Indeed, our feelings would prompt us to draw a veil over the whole fatal affair, but that our duties as a public Journalist require a different course at our hands. At tire time and place above stated, a rencontre took place between Wil liam J. Mooney, and Kenyon Mooney, his son, upon one side, and Edward Bell and his brother, Bush rod Bell, Jr. upon the other.— Dining the affray, three pistols were fired, and knives or daggers were resorted to. Ed ward Beil was shot in the throat and neck with three balls, which penetrated to the ver tebra-. Kenyon Mooney was shot through the rigid arm, tlie ball grazing his breast; he also received a stab in the same arm, which passing through wottrded him slightly in the rigid side. Writ. J. Mooney was stabbed in two places in the abdomen, entirely dividing the stomach. The younger Bell was, we understand, uninjured. Mr. Edward Bell was most probablv dis j allied at the first tinsel, though ti e affair is j yet enveloped in sonic mystery, as few or none 1 of the witnesses saw the whole of the affray, (and it was begun and fatally ended in the in j tervalof hut a very few seconds. The elder [ Mooney died on Thursday morning of his wounds. He has left a large and interesting family, aid a circle of respectable neighbors and friends, to mourn his untimely and vio lent end. He was kind and hospitable in bis relations in life, and beloved bv his friends and neighbors, hot he has fallen a victim to me fiendish practice of carrying deadly weapons, and that still more insatiate and hellish mon sler intenfer\nce. When will the votaries of these vires hear the voice of warning? Mr. Edward Belt, died of the wounds re ceived in this fell ret entitle, on Friday last. The numerous friends who crowded around his liloodv pillow, and ti e anxious crowds wl o waited with anxiety at die door of his s*ck room, ran bear ample testimony to his numerous virtues. He was generous, cour teous, peaceful and brave, * ven to a fault. The chivalry of Ins nature, and, perhaps a mistaken, though generous impulse, for an i absent and traduced fiiend, led to the unfor j Innate affray which terminated a life dear to j his friends and valuable to his country. Tie lias left a widowed mother and orphan sisters j to weep over the short and unfortunate career 1 of a most affect innate son and brother. But we must turn our eves from lhe sor rowing relatives of a husband and father, sent to a blood v grave in the noontide of life, and of a son and brother, whose memory is hal lowed hv a thousand tender reccollectSons. and see ii there he not others upon whom, at least, some share of popular indignation should rest. How stand the importers and dealers in Pistols and Bowie knives in this matter? W here, the still more immediate accessories, the retailer of the intoxicating draught, which fired the brain, and made lhe hospitable, kind neighbor, forget the feelings natural to his heart and seek to embroil in blood v affray, those who, under different circumstances, it would have afforded him pleasure to serve and ac knowledge as friends. How stands the case with our citv authori ties, when men armed with the instruments ;of death and slaughter, had been, (or hours previous to the fatal catastrophe, parading the streets, in a slate of intoxication, so that isuch difficulties might have been reasonably apprehended? Shall we hold those hlamf j less, whose timely interference to arrest the j unfortunate Monncv and his companions, when the peace and good order of the citv called (or it, woukl have prevented this dread ful stain upon our name. and have saved lhe lives of two valuable citizens, and the heart rending anguish of their families? Ifour Citizens are not safe from such fatal rencontres, which might so ens'lv and timelv have been prevented, then indeed, we live in fearful times, and a still more fearful place. From the Spirit of the Times. JOHN HASCOMBE'S PEDIGREE. Foiit JitrcmiL. (Ala.) March 22. 1838. Sir, —Your paper of the 241 h Feb. has just i met niv eye, in winch is an article headed! “ Breeding for the Turf” over the signature] of “ B.” In the course of the writer’s re marks, he has attempted to implicate the ped-l igree of John Bascombe, thereby doubting j the correctness o( his pedigree as published. He says, —“There is a living example be-j fore our eyes, in which the value of a stallion j will he lessened in public estimation for the 1 want of an authentic pedigree.—John Bus-j < combe,” he states, “was got by Bertrand. I and ins dam by Pacolet: further than this the record does not show;” and then says—j “ his appearance and performance are those | ol a thorough bred of the first order, hut J whether lie is or not no man can vouch.” Fn replv to the above remarks, I will state that I did not raise Bascombe, hut I publish ed his pedigree upon what I considered good j authority—here it is. I have the testimony; ol Mr. Conallv, who bred him. that he was: giit hv Bertrand, and came out of a grevniare! lv Pic >!et. I have next ihe certificate of J. G. Jones, the breeder n| the grey mare that she was got by Pacolet, and came out of a bav mare by imported Buzzard wh'ch bav mare, he states, was bred by John Harris, of Kenfuckv. I also have the certificate of’ John Harris, that he raised the bav mare, and that she was got by imported Buzzard, her dam by Gen. \\ ade Hampton’s Paragon, her gran lam by old Slamerkin, and she bv imported WiMatr. out of the imported Club Una re. I have here given my authority for the published pedigree of Bascombe. If the cer tificates ot the above named gentlemen are not vouchers f!r his true pedigree further ‘ban sire and dam, as stated hy “ 8.,” why ‘ben, in the estimation of“ B.” he must labor under the imputation of a doubtful pedigree. JNO. CROWELL. Editor Spirit of the Times. Our Whig neighbors in New Orleans don’t like the smell of democratic powder, while they snuff the fumes of Whig sali-petie with inexpressible delight. The ‘‘ big gun” was mounted lor the New Hampshire elections to boom over the defeat of Isaac Hill —but the Green Mountain Democrats were too strong lor the “ Taunton water, that (lor weakness) could not run down Hill,” and they burnt i he powder in their own triumph. At New Orleans, a thousand guns announced the vic tory of the allied powers, the triple league of Banks, \\ lugs, and Conservatives, over the Democracy of New York, and now they be grudge the Louisiana Democracy, the explo sion ol a pop-gun in honor of their late muni cipal triumph. Turn and turn about is fair lHy, Ft os enjoy our pyrotechnical flourishes; over New Hampshire and New Orleans,: Connecticut perhaps, will soon feed you with ■ over delusive hopes of ultimate and complete! ascendency. The True American says : Rhe Democrats are a most luckv set ofj devils; they not only elect their candidates| by whig votes, hut they celebrate their tri-j nmph hy the cannon of the State, which their | Loco Foco General Piauche lends to them, although he refuses them to the wliigs, on the plea flint they are the property of (Tie State, and should not be used for party pin-poses.” — Mobile Com.
