t&r the Sentinel and Herald. SKETCHES, AD LIBITUM. ■ V HORATIO WALDO, Kq. 3/m Meadows. —This beautiful, interest ing, and talented child, has not only attracted the attention and won tlie affections of the young and inexperienced, hut those of riper years, of maturer knowledge, and of much acquaintance with the drama, who have seen drill known her, have h-rne attestation of her superior charms and astonishing qualities of mind. Amongst others, who have spoken out as it were from their souls, is Mr. A* A. Ad.lams, the tragedian, who has often delight ed us with his masterly personations of Shaks peare’s heroes. The following lines are from his pen : 41 Pray let me speak; and the word* I utter Let none think flattery, for they’ I find them true : This beauteous child—God bless her—now promises, Upon the stage a thousand, thousand orn m-nt*, Which time sha'l to perfection bring ; she shall be A model to those arosis living with her, A'id all who shall succeed. Kiddon* was never M so covetous of jus: conception, and chaste style, Than this fair child shall be—heaven)v graces Shall still be doubled on her. She shall be admired, Not only as an artinte. but as a good woman.” I am deeply conscious that flattery holds in her hand a poisoned shaft, which she is ever busy to hurl at the innocent and unsuspecting heart; and that these shafts are now flying through the atmosphere of society, as thick at the arrows of archers who lived in fabled times; but mv hand grasps not the bow that would spring a barbed spear at tlie peace of this most interesting and charming girl. [ would say of her, many and great are her gifts i lint stie must watch over them with fearful caution : I would say to her, if tiiou xrilt entwine around thy young heart the muse of witching snug and tragic story, then let it be thy care to treasure her beauties, and copy her virtues. i My pen would never tire in writing of this prodigy of nature, but suffice for the present with the Pillowing lines, which having written •in her Album, I will take the liberty here to •transcribe: MISS MEADOWS. “ A VARV OIPsY SHE APPEAR*.” A fairy-likc creature she looks, With son;* and wih dances she comes; What student will cling to his books, ■His rehearsals and wearisome tomes When she sings her bright “ Castanet Song?” She is playful and witching to view. And darts her bright eyes to the heart; She has roses for you Sir, and you, And in all things acts chastely her pari— Oh ! list to her “ Castanet Song.” She's a family all in one b-rnk, With ■* The M vbravs” she plays as a toy She pictures the girl in a look. And frolics and dances the hoy. Heard you ever her “ Castanet Son* ?” With the tartan, the sword, and the plume She stands the * Young Norvai’ of‘Home,* And tho* her fate be the picture of gloom, Still she braves every danger to erme, And weaves her wild *• Castan-t Song.” Thd’ she tell* you tha* she's a “speilrd child,” And plav* •” Little Pickle” to prove it, And caper* all ninib'e and wild. With a vowdbai she n wer will rue it; Yet her heart will forgive her the while, ’ Sinoo then she is doom'd’ to fell sorrow, And you’ll see ‘twixt a tear and a smile, Her resolve to do bolter 10-uiorrow. And chant her swee* “ Castanet Song.” Child of music, ami genius, and charm, Thy pathway it elust’.ing with flowers, Thv dream* never tell thee of harm, A* thou walkest the earli’sf agrant boners, Giriiy chan ia ‘ thy •* Castanet Song.” Yet re n .nher dear g rl that the rose, Mi .i ‘vii in vour bisom implant, Play di.-erect’,>• the part youth ve chose, And to vir'iti: *m chant, .V’hilo yon strike lie light “ Castanet Song.” From the (Express slip) N. Y. Herald. MONEY MAR KE T. Thursday, Mac 17. Since tlie resumption of tite Stale Banks, business hi Wall street has been rapullv gaitt in*r ground, exchanges have been un|)iovmg, and alt brandies of fiu.ine.ial atf.itrs t.ave as sumed an a|ne<iranee of prosperity. Tins has been partly ejected under tne belief that the Stale and i'oil.idelptiia banks would fall into the measure, and he followed by the southern institutions. We have now reach ed alack water, and matters having touched their highest point, will probably recede until ■oinetfuug definite u done with regard to a general resumption. The news from th 4 * south is not of ro favorable a nature to-day aa for some days back. It was announced that the State Bank of Louisiana had re turned —this is true with regard to the notes only, and of these there are scarce any in circulation. The bank is daily issuing ]>o*t notes, payable in 1840. A large amount of old notes of the United States Bank were sent from Mobile to N *w Orleans for sale, to raisr money for eott >n operations. This increased the demand for Ala ha mi funis. Exchange Oil New York on iht* 9th was 8 a 9 1-2 |re- I mil in, 10 uays siifht. ft appears the south- j ern tniiks are still operating largely in the j cotton markets. The agent of the Brandon i Bulk (Miss.) was freely off Ting the hills of; that bank at the rate of $lO per bale lor the next year’s crop, secured hv a forth coming bond.* These bills are all of anew emission, ; dated April, 1888. Not only this bank, but most of the southern hulks, a:,; thus extend ing iargelv on cotton, b>th for this and the coming crop. This does not look like pre paration for resumption. M r . Biddle, it is pretty evident, will preserve firmly and stea dily the poliev he has marked out —regulate the time of his resumption by tie* success of ltia cotton speculations, and in his wake fol low most of the southern hanks. Therefore there will be no resumption, or attempts at it, at least until the rising ol Congress. In the mean time exchange will recede to some cxient. , From the New • —••> • i -raid, Mi IS. FOUR DAYS LA IKK l-'Oim rve are indebted to Capt. Ferris, of the ship Westchester, winch arrived last evening from Liver[x>ol, for papers of that place to April 24th, and London to the 23 1, both in clusive. The packet ship C imbridge, from New Y<rk, April Ist, was below Liverp<tol on the 53d, but had not succeeded in getiiag up the river at 11 o’clock at night. A paragraph which we copy from the Lon don Observer, in regard to the shipments of •pecie to this country bv the Bank of Eng land, confirms all that had been previously stated, and more. Military movements are again active in Spain. The Spanish government have a prospect of eftectiug ‘a considerable loan in Faria. From the London Observer, April 22. Th American trade remains in an ex ceedingly dull state. Tlte resumption of spe cie exports on account of the directors of the Bank of England has, however, inspired those merchant* who are et gaged in t-;e trade with the United States with more con fidence, and the hope certainly is that there will l?e yet a brisk demand for manufactured goods for the /all trade. By the London line of packet abip Philadelphia, which left Ports mouth yesterday morning for New York, the Bank of England have remitted to their agfr'.f, Mr. Cowell, above 170,000'. in jo'd, and this ship had also on hoard specie on Erivate merchants’ account to tlie extent of etween 50,000/. and 60,000/. By the packet which wttl il from Liver pool, fir the sanu* rieKtinsttHO) of Tuesday, it is intended to forward a much larger sum. anti should the stale of tfie exchanges upon E ig land remain as favorable a* they were at the last dates from New York, it is stated that specie will be exported hv the bank and oth ers to the extent of 1,000,000/. or 1.500 000/. in addition to the previous con sign mews that , were made a few weeks since. These ship-! menta would increase the stock of bullion in ihe coffers of the p-incitml hank* of America hy about 2,500,000/. indrtiend ’ittlv of the large sums which had reached N*w Orletns from South America. The determination of, the hanks to resume specie payments will no doubt he effected with the view of preserving : their charters, even should it be fitind im- j practicable to continue to pay their notes in ! gold. Should the hanks of America carry j j into operation the determinsi'ion which thev ! have come to upon this subject, co'jfi lence ! I will speedily revi e throughout that country, and we may anticipate a considerable infl tx of orders fi r goods e"en during the present : year. This has been an extremely dull dav in the city, as far as regard* fireign nr domestic | intelligence. ft was expecte ‘■ among the merchants connected with the United States, that the packet which in due course ought to have lef? New York on the l*t instan', would have arrived ere this. The contents of the l advices lo he received hv her are looked for j with much interest, as noon the state of the money market there will ma erial'v deoend the extent to which hudne** mav he carried on in British gooda before the conclusion of the present yen r. Yount: tVomen. —There is nearly alwava something of nature’s own gentility in every young woman /except indeed when they g-t together and fall a gigling ;) it shames us men j to see how much sooner they are polished in to conventional shape, than our rough, mas culine angles. A vulgar hov requires great assiduity to move three step*—l do not sty like a gentleman, hut like a hodv that has a soul in it; hut give the least advantage of so ciety or tuition to a peasant gir ! . and a hun dred to one hut she wi'l glide into refinement, before the hov can make a how without up setting the table. There is a sentiment in all ‘ women, and sentiment gives delic.acv to thought and tact to manner.
