Captain Chester Hilliard, of Norwich, a
pa .siTger oa b aid front chi h w.* I arega
u.ered these ie*v pa ueid trs, states that soon
alter lite engine stopped the passengers be
g,n to leave ihe boat on boxes, bales. &c.
i:i company with one of the firemen he
was so fortunate as to secure a cotton hale,
to which Le lashed himself. He remained
upon this bile, t fie wind blowing off Long Is
land, uni 1 11 o’clock tins morning wl eu he
was taken up by the sloop Meichaut of South*
port.
His companion in the mean time had been
released by deadly from Ins sufferings. Two
oihers were taken tip by the sloop, a fireman
win! i tie Pilot of the boat. Both were neatly
insensible. It is surprising that any should 1
have sin vived ihe exposure.
There is too much reason to fear that the
three are the only survivors. It is however,
possible that oihers may have been saved.
The boat drifted up the sound with ihe
tale, and was off this harbor about midn'ght.
Capl. H. states that site stink at S o’clock,
as he marked the time by his wild).
The eflbris which were last, night made in
tins vicinity and at Southport, to go in aid of
tiie sufferers, proved, owing to the ice in the
harbors, and to oilier untoward circumstan
ces, entirely unavailing.
W e learn that a boat which succeeded in
getting out of Southport harbor, alter reach
ing ihe middle of the Sound was compelled to
return.
The account which we have given of this
aivful catastrophe, is exceedingly imp r'ect.
It may he well imagined that nor informant
is hardly in a situation to furnish many de
tail.
FURTHER PARTICULARS.
Captain Hilliard states that lie left the city
in the Lexington, on Monday at 3 P M, at
about half past 7, there was a cry of fire. He
ran on deck and discovered the boat to be on
lire near the smoke pipe. It soon raged so
much that all was contusion—the boats were
filled with about -20 passengers each, and the
falls were let k r o while the boat was under
full head way, and (filed with water; and
he thiiiKS it probable that not a soul was sa
led ahve from the boats. He saw about 20
with life peiservers in the water, but they
must have perished from cold. He got on a
hale of cotton, and was taken off hv Captaih
Meeker itt the sloop Merchant of Southport.
The fire was dis-overed from the shore, and
an attempt made to go out, but the sloop
grounded and lay until morning, high water —
then went off and picked u:> Capl tan Chester
II Ilia rd passenger, Mr. Manchester the pi

A Mr. Co.*, a fireman, was on the same

discovered, he sought refuge on the rudder,

the botit answered her he m up to the timo

metal rods and chains connected with her
rudJer, it would long before have been use
less. That she was provided with than
indisputable.
From the Times.
There can be but little doubt that thecom
bustion of the vessel was infinitely more ra*
pid inconsequence of the inflammable nature
of her cargo. Yet notwithstanding this aw
ful warning, we have it from good authority,
that the steamboat Massachusetts, Captain
Comstock, leU tor Stoniugton, yesterdny af
ternoon, with her deck so encumbered by
bales of cotton that it was difficult to traverse
the vessel from stem to s ern without climbing
over them. We are also informed that tl*e
cotton was piled up around the smoke pipe*
The passengers, with the horrible news just
received ringing in their ears, of course mur
mured at this apparently heartless disregard
ot human life, that several of them, we learn,
loudly declared that the dangerous freight
should go overboa id b. fore die Massachusetts
reached her place of destination.
We trust trat an expression of public opin
ion, too emphatic to be disregarded, will
lay an embargo on the shipment of such
combustible material hereafter, in boats in
tended for the accomodation of passengers.
From the Whig.
M e would correct the erroneous report of
Mrs fuller) and J) Slone’s being on board
the Lexington. The former is in ihis city,
and iht: latier went to Bos!on the previous
trip. The niece of Mr J irv is is not, (us w
also erroneously reported) among the lost.—
She was to have accompanied Mrs Jarvis,
but did not.
Captain Hilliard saw some five or six ladies
at tea.
From the De-patch.
The life boat was one of common construc
tion, to-which copper lubes bad been added.
Though not one oi’tlie most perfect descrip
tion, it would have answered the purpose of
the salvation of much life, hurl it not been
launched forward of the wheels, and crushed.
From the Sim.
W hen the alarm was first gix 7 en as many
as twenty passengers leaped into one of the
small boats, the bow haliard of which was
let go without the stern haliard being eased
at ail and before the latter was sufficiently
loosed l>> allow the st< rn to touch the wa-
Ir, the boat was so full of water that she
instantly swamped, and left the unfortunate
passengers helpless in the water.
We learn that the company will this mor
ning despatch a host to the scene of dread
ful disaster, and do nil that is possible to re
cover the bodies of the perished.
We regret to have lo add, that among the
passengers were the vvde and two interesting
children of Rnseii Jarvis, !vq. f'irmerly of
Boston, more latterly ed ter of the Philadel
phia W >rld, and at present editor of the Eve
ning Taltlcr m this eilv. Captain Hilliard,
whose attention had been to this inteicsting
and unfortunate family at the table, saw
Mrs. .1 irves Hotting witn one of her children
in her arms on n ale of cotton. The other
child had leaped overboard, as bad also a
great tinny other passeng- rs—some twenty
of whom had life pr,■server-: on. Wh n ob
