THE THOROUGH BRED RACE HORSE
# LINWOOD.
HAVING wi hdrawn Lmwood from the turf in
consequence of an injury in hts legs, he will
stand the ensuing spring season, one half ofhis time at
my stables about three miles East of Coluinnus and
the ether half at Maj. Henry Kendall’s oil Upatoy.
The season to commence at ray stables on the 15th
day of February and close about the last of July.
Linwood will be let to mares at thirty dollars the sea
son, and fifty to ensure, and one dollai to the groom in
every in-nance. In every case when the mare is sent
it will be expected that a note for the season money
will accompany the mare. Mares will |e kept bdth at
Maj. Kendall's and at the Proprietor’s own farm at
the usual rates, and every care taken to prevent acci
dents and escapes, but no liability will be incurred for
either.
Pedigree and Description.
Linwood is a light chesnut, of remarkable beauty
and fine form, fifteen and three-quarter hands high, of
gay, graceful, spirited action, wnh a very docile tem
per. a quality much to be desired in a race horse, and
which runs in the veins of all the Pacolets, to whom he
is closely allied in blood. He was five old last
spring, was bred by Mr. John Cpnitally of Alabama,
tfie b eeder of Jo in Bascoril'b, Bill Austin, Gander,
and other distinguished runners, and was got by the
celebrated race horse Wild Bill, dam by old Pacole.t,
grand dam by imp. Diomed, great grand dam by imp.
Wiidair, great great grand dam by imp. Shark. &c.
Wild Bill was by Sir Archv, out of McNorrel’s old
sorrel marc, Mariali, a Georgia nag, who’ was also the
dam of Charles Ivemble and other good runners—
Mariah was by Gallatin, dam by imp. Bedford, (also
tnc sire of Gallatin,) g. and. by Gen. McPherson’s De
bonair, g. g. and. by grey Diomed, g. g. g and. by Wiklait,
&c. Pacolct, the sire of Linwood’s dam, was bv imp.
Citizen. and was the progenitor of most of the best
racing stock of the West.
From the pedigree it will be seen that Linwood
traces iriirfiediatcly to the very best English horses
ever imported into America, viz: imp. Diomed, imp.
Bedford, imp. Citizen, imp. Wiidair, imp. Shark, &c;
it is the opinion of many of our Ynost distinguished
breeders and judges that the descendants of these
horses have not been improved by the recent fashiona
ble importations. Linwood was let to a few marcs
the two last seasons and proved himself to be a sure
foal getter. His colts are remarkably large and band
some, and will compare with the get of any horse in
the State. I can with great confidence recommend
him to mv f tends and the public as a first rate horse
in every respect to breed frojn. cither for tho saddle,
the farm, or the turf.
Performances.
Linwood made his first race on the Ist day of May.
1837, over the Western Course at Columbus Ga.,
being then three years old, -.nd carrying full 86 lbs.
On that occasion, he won the two mile Jockey Club
purse, at two heats and with great ease, beating Black
Duke. Crqnonieter, and the celebrated two mile hors
Blue Black, in 3 tn. arid 60 sec. each heat. In conse
quence of the extraordinary promise exlubi ed in this
race I pUrthased him from Col. John Blevins, and
immediately afterwards, at his curliest solicitation,
permitted him to be taken to Alabama, in the stable of
Col. Blevins. In travelling to Mon gomery lie was
very badly foundered, which doubtless affecied his
racing powers ever alter. In the fall of 1837 he was i
taken to Greensborough, Ala. by Col. Blevins, and
although in very bad condition won the Joekey Club
purse two mile heats, beating a good field cf h'drses
and making the best race which was made during the
week. He was tlietJ tdkeft to M bile and entered for
the Jockey Club purse two mile hfcats, was beaten the
first heat and withdrawn. He was then taken to
Mon'goriiery in January 18.38, and again beaten two
mile neats. He was returned to ine in the spring of
1838 in a wretchrd condition, and w ith the tendons of
both legs greatly inflamed and enlarged; he was then
turned out until fall, when he was put in training, bus
his legs becanfe-so much swollen that it was necessary
to ,blister them severely and stop’ Ins ezefetse, in con
sequence of which he did not start at the races over
the Western Course that fall. lie was then Taken to
Macon, and with only two weeks exercise and still
complaining ii his legs, he was started for the Jockey
Club purse, four mile heats, against I ban a and Gerow,
lie won the first heat in the best time ci’cf tffade over
the track, and was beaten the two last b+ Gerow, both
in gtxid time and after a very severe and close contest.
Two weeks after he was again started the four mile
day at Milledgeville against Gerow and Alice Ann.
A few minutes before the start he broke loos& from the
groom and run abntit two miles over the track, from
place to place, with a crowd at his heels; he was
caught, and in this worried condition started in the
race in which hp was beaten by Gerow. He was
again beaten in Augusta in December following, three
mile heats, by Col. Hampton’s Emily and others. The
I condition of his legs was such that he could not be
train't din the spring off 839. In the fall he was again
put in training, and although greatly complaining, won
‘he Jockev Club purse, three mile heats, over the
-ourse at Columbus, beating Gen. Scott’s West Wind
and others at two I cats in 5.56, 6.C0. Two weeks
afterwards, he was started the four mile day at Macon,
and run one h*at in which he was again beaten by
Gerow. After ’he heat the tondons ofhis legs became
so much inflamed and enlarged that I was sstisfied
tliev would completely give way in another heat, and
I withdrew him from the race and from the turf.
Linwood’s firsi race over the course at Columbus
was. under the i ircumstances. theb st two mile race
ever made over that trafck, and exhibited first rate
speed, whil-t his t \ elve mile race at Macon with
Gerow shewed that lie was a hor-e of bottom. lie
has never starred in g- od condition since his first race,
al hough he has made a great many and some very
good races. I have no hesitation in expressing the
opinion, that if he had not been foundered is started, and
otherwise injured, he would have made one of the
most distinguished race horses of his dav.
