7 uo lovely and lou early lost!
.* 1/ .o. , hugs to thee,
F r tlmu watt once my guiding tlar
Amid ihe treacherous sea;
IJat do'jbly cold and cheerless now,
The wave 100 dark before,
Since every lieac. n-lighl U quenched
Along the midnight shore.
J taw thee first, when hope aroso
On youth's triumphant wing,
And thou wast lovelier than the light
Os early dawning Spring.
Who ikon could dream, that health and joy
Would e'er desert the brow,
So bright with vain mg lustre once,
to chill and changeless now?
That brow 1 Ir.iw proudly o'er it then
Thy kingly beauty hung,
W hen wit, or eloquence or mirth
Caine burning from the tongue ;
Or when upon that glowing check
The kindling sonic was '•pread,
Or tcais, to thine own woes deniud,
For others' glief tu siieti. .
Thy mind! I, ever was the homo
Os high and holy thought;
Thy life, uti emble m 1 pure truths
Thy pure example taught;
When blended in thine eve of light
As flout a royal throne
Kindness and peace and virtue there
In nniig ed tadianco sh mu.
Onoevening when the Autumn dew
Upon the lulls was shed,
And Hesperus, far down the West
His starry host had led,
Tlmu said st, ho .v sadly and how oft
To that prophetic eye,
Vtalons of daiknogs and decline
And early death were nigh.
It was a voice front other worlds,
Which none besides might hear,
Like tlio n glu b eeze's plaintive lyre,
liicathed faintly on the ear ;
I; was the warning kindlv given,
When blessed spirits come
.T'roin their bright paradise above,
To call a sister home
Jlow sadly on my spirit then
That futnl warning foil!
Cut oh, the dark reality
Another voice may tell;
The quick decline the parting sigh—
The slowly moving bier—
The lifted sod—the . culptured stone—
The unavailing tear. —
The amaranth (lowers tha, bloom in heaven ;
Entwine hy tomplesnow,
The crown that shines iniinoi tally
on thy brow ;
round the burning throne
Have borne thee to thy rest,
’ To dwell among the saints on high,
Companion ol the blest.
The sun hath set in folded clouds—
Its twilight i a. s are g. ne,
And ga'heied m the shades of night,
Tire storm is rolling on
Alas '. how ill that bursting storm
The fainting spirit braves,
When they, the lovely and the lost
Are gone to curly graves.
