lixaggerutect reports ore spreading’
xve believe through the county in regard
to the. prevalence of small pox in onr
town. It is in the nature ot'ali reports
tiV increase much in importance and
magnitude, as they recede from the
point of origin; ami upon a subject
xviiich so sensildy affects the public
generally, it may be expected that the
excited fears of the uninformed xviU give
form and reality to the slightest crea
tions of fancy. It is in a great measure
to the sensitiveness of public feeling on
the subject of contagious disease,
that public safety so entirely de
pends, Butin regard to the reports a
bout the small pox in Columbus, we are
able to state that they are almost entire
ly groundless. There never has been
but one case, in the county; that, was
the case of a female, who was removed
immediately on the appearance of the
disease. She was placed under quar
antine, as were all those xvho were sus
pected of having been exposed to the
infection; the house in which she had
resided was burned down: these togeth
er with the other energetic regulations
of our police, effectually checked the
disease, and it has appeared in no oth
cr instance.
Gubernatorial Election.— The election
eering campaign of the present year, if
it does not possess all the exciting in
terest of some previous ones, affords at
least, some instructive lessons. To ns,
who are merely lookers on, all the prin
cipal actors in the field, appear as if they
were -altogether ashamed of the parts
tliey had taken, and were forced on
ward without the assent of their will,
and merely by the force of circumstan
ces. It is known that Gilmer is not pop
ular with his own party, against the
majority of whose wishes he came into
office. Though his administration has !
manifested the most abject devotion to
party prejudices, and party discipline,
yet lie has failed to propitiate the good
xviilof the old leaders of the party; and
bis measures so deficient in energy and
decision, so wanting in firmness and in
dependence, hax’e exposed him to the
contempt of those whose exertions first
placed him in power. Placed in the ex
ecutive chair by an overwhelming ma
jority, he soon forfeited the confidence
of the people, by his devotion to the in
terests of the aristocracy; although e-
Iccted by the people in opposition to
this aristocracy. Yet no sooner was he
in office, than lie turns his face against
those who placed him in power, and |
converts the whole patrouage of bis of
fice into the means of buying up the fa
vor of this aristocracy. Office upon of
fice is heaped upon members of the fa
vored few; all favors flow in a particu
lar channel; and finally he recommends
v that the great I ody of the people should
be deprived of all interest in the gold
mines, to the intent that the few may
grow fat on their plunder. Mr. Gilmer
is certainly unpopular with the people,
and his party, and he is only upheld by
interest on the one hand, and fear on
the other. There are a hundred men in
the state who could beat him out and
out. it is a pity they hax*e not been
brought forward. Hut although Mr. j
Ha ynes who opposes him from his own
party, will attract around him a strong
support from the friends of the people,
yet his claims are rather ridiculed than
respected. Though a friend of the peo
ple, and a stanch anil fearless one, yet
he lias not discretion enough to serve
them wisely or efficiently. He is sup
ported not so much from a conviction of
his woilhiness, as from dislike to his
competitor. And in regard to the can
didate whom our friends have brought
forward, what can be.suid in his behalf?
Is he above reproach, or like Cesar’s
wile, the suspicion of it? Does he pos
sess the confidence of those xx’ho are
most intimate xvith him? Or on the con
tiary, is he not brought forward by
those opposed to the present stale of
filings in Georgia, rather in the hope
that his popularity, (which in fact ison
ly what they have given him, and what
• they can withdraw when it suits them)
may be made use of in the service of the
union, the country' anti their party; none
are attached to him by any other ties
than those of selfishness, and these are
r.pt to fail in the day of trial.
To those then who like oursclx’es are
merely “lookers on in Venice,” this
state of things must he a source of con
siderable amusement. Blit the contest
itself must be devoid of all those high Fc
exciting feelings, which have charac
terised some of the preceding elections
in Georgia. Whichever party may
Mioced, it is not probable there will l>e
mill’ll change in the policy or the mea
sures of the state.
It has recently been decided in the Dis
trict Court of the United States for the

FROM EUROI E.
The ship Majestic , capt. Page, arrived
in this yesterday afternoon, from Liver
pool, having left that port on the (jth of
June. By the politeness of commercial
friens xve have London papers of the eve
ning of the 2d and Liverpool to the 3d
June. We annex such extracts as are
of interest.
London, June 2.
It is Confidently reported iri the city
that an express lias arrived from Berlin,
with an account of the defeat of the Rus
sian grand ’ army ; that the Roles have
got into the rear of the Russians, cut off
the imperial guard, and intercepted their
provisons. Most devoutly do we hope
that this glorious news is true !
The Journal ties Debats , of the 31st
May, says —“We have this moment re
\ ceived from Berlin by express, the news
of the DEFI.AT OF TIIB GRAND I’uSSIAN
j army. The Roles are pursuing the re
. mains of it, and have, intercepted the reni-
I cant of the imperial guard. This news
caused an immediate and great rise in the
English funds.
At a late hour we received the follow
ing papers. We have no time for com
ment. —
Wa us aw. May 28.—Our State Gazette
contains some particulars of the move
ments of our troops north of the Narew.
It was on the 18th that they entered Os
troleuka. The advanced posts there ex
tended to Miastkow, but a division is said
to have gone further and occupied the
town of Lom/.a, in the palatinate of Att
gustowe. Narew on the Btig is also oc
cupied by’ our troops. These reports say
that our troop took at Ostrolenka some
magazines, about 15,000 florins in tnon
ev, several vessels laden with provisions,
•100 or 500 prisoners. 3,000 ton of salt,
and the very valuable baggage of gener
al Bystrun of the Russian guard. It is
said that 3,000 Russians were taken pris
oners at Lomza, and that our troops did
j not stop here but advanced to stowicki.—
j Thus it seems clearly intended to give
| new confidence to the insurgents in Au
[ gustowo, who received so severe a cheek
at the end of April, near Mariampol. It
is however affirmed that the army at the
same time retains its frontiers about Sied
lec. The State Gazette observes that no
official accounts of all these events had
reached Warsaw on account of the dis
tance.
The diet has resolved that the army
shall he augmented as soon as possible
by a’new regiment from each province.
The 11 eirsenc Gazette says that the
whole Russian army is now in motion in
different directions.
L OLL'MBUS, Juried, 1-31.
To the Intend ant & Commissioners
of Columbus.
Since Quarantine regulations have been
established, no new ease of small pox has
appeared in town or the vicinity. Vac
cination has disarmed the disease in its
incipiency, and a continuance of the dis
cipline now exercised by your authority
will protect the town from any further
importation of the horrid disease.
1 have learned from an indisputable
source, that the ravages of the infection
in the vicinity of the Warrior’s Stand and
Eersimon swamp in the Creek Nation has
been arrested by timely vaccination, and
that, a general plan of vaccinating has
been instituted among the Indians by au
thority of the Agent. By thus striking at
the root, we may confidently look for a
permanent immunity in this section of
the country.
Respectfully,
FITZGERALD BIRD,
