'i lit* friends cf the Union akrocti q j;j no dcui)l be preotly surprised B i*«! dis appointed* at the result of tin* election in l!ii.' county: t!» ;i » ik* patriotic peo ple of sliotilil hove triven tnoir eufij.ijre* to the NuiliiLis. is in deed on astounding* fact. Hut the truth is. many of them have been token in. Livioff in toe pinry n noils, am! net tah isi'T the Democrat. they were exposed to the rotifer* of the Nollies; whohav i"? tr ß t a few ( lark men amours then* ei i.-d out they were the true friends of Ihe country, nnd ninny of the tii.iiifonn ed. believed them. Hut lliia u,otter! wilt shortly he remedied. Our friends! in tire country will hereafter take care mid read the democrat, nnd thus forti iy themselves against imposition And we can assure the friends of the Union iihroad, that the people of Musco- are with them in sentiment, nnd! although’itey have been tricked out of! their votes, yet they have not parted! with theii principles. And then these pim v woods f lows are very devils in *' tifrht cervmmagc; if you whip (hem to! d.iy. they won't stag whipt, bat force you ' to try it oil over ngroin tomorrow: so j tin* Nulljes need not exult too much in their present advantage. * They will be in t again at Philippi. There is still some further explanation ! which entire fairness induces us to give on the choice of delegates to the convention. Previous to the morning of the election, printed tickets had been prepared both hy the friends of the union and the iiulties. containing a ful| list of the candidates for congress, legis lature, and convention; and notwith standing ihcse were used in voting, yet I'cfbia* night it was somehow or other found out hy ihe nullies that their Irionds bad not voted for the conven tion candidates. W hereupon, on the mere say so. of the nullies, they were permitted hy the managers, to vote over ag ..n! Thus allowing the nullies, those of them so disposed, (and as to disposition, when men are engaged in dishonest courses, how few will stop at dishonest means)- -an opportunity ot voting twice for their andidates. .Ma gic* was nc,t necessary af.cr this, to foretell the resuit. A correspondent of the Macon Telb omni, lias recommended a list of candi dates for Electors of President and Vice President, friendly to the election of Geu. Jackson and P. I*. Harbour, winch we have inserted in another column. The candidates nominated by the Troup con vention, and who it is presumed will vote for Jackson and Van Buri n, wo have also published. Though we are not the ad mirers of .Mr. Van Buren’s character, yet we do not feel ourselves particularly call ed on to oppose his election at tins time, to ilie Vice Presidency. We have hith erto been silent on the subject; because, while another election was pending which wc deemed of much more consequence, we w ished the people to pass judgment upon the subjects connected with it, un influenced hy any other considerations. But after that subject has been concluded we take occasion to say one word upon the presidential election. Mr. Van Ho ren is the candidate of the Jackson party in the Eastern, Western, Middle, and some of the Southern States. He is the candidate of the Union party in tin- South ern States. Is this not some reason why we should waive some personal objections for the purpose of preserving unanimity niriong ourselves, and securing the lead ing objects for which the party is con tending Again—Mr. Barbour, though himself not a nnllifier, is yet the candidaß of tlie iuillifiers in South Carolina; who are running Inin for the |m.sjjoso of weaken ing “Tlie administration of Jackson. Under such circumstances, would it not lie hotter for the Uuion party of Geor gia, having in view a common object, to be governed by common councils, and Support the Jackson and Union candi date? Again—ls there even a slight probabil ity, that Mr. Barbour can receive the e lectora! vote of Georgia? If not, why strive for itnpossiblities? But we have said enough to shew our views of the subject. We are willing to overlook trifles in the accomplishment of great objects. The Union must he pre served—the administration of Jackson must he sustained. And if Van Buren’s election is necessary to the accomplish ment of these'great ends—let not our per sonal disli e of the man, thwart the meas ures essential to their success But iu this tnntter we are not obstinate. M e wish to 20 with our friends, nml preserve Immunity in our own ranks. If the 1 - nion party of Georgia consider it expe dient to run a Ticket of their own, though our private judgment might dictate other wise, we shall feel it a matter of conse quence to go with them. But,strati"* as it may appear, we daily see a manifest disposition from many men to abridge these rights in others; of whom, (from their intelligence) vn should Ik; glad to fhi.m better things; while at the same time they are the loudest to contend for lie fr«e and unrestrained rights of the people. A little reflection will shew the inconsistency and folly of such, txr.4 to wn n end they would soon bring a repub lic it they had the power. There was frost in thecity of Albany on the mornings of the 24th and 2e»ih\ It. (August.) The Kingston U. C. A slight coating of ice was seen on the hay at ail early hour.” Two persons wore playing cards in a barn, in Middletown, Dauphin county, Pa. on Saturday, when they quarrelled and fought concerning the stake, 12 1-2 cents, and one killed the other. The of fender has been secured and lodged in the Harrisburg jail. An inquest was held over the body of the deceased, whose name was Joseph Sanford, and a verdict of murder returned against the survivor. Great l nioti and Free Trade J lectiog in Mobile. —One of the largest public meetings ever assembled in Mobile, con vened at the Court House oil Saturday last, tor the object of making a public ex pression ot their sentiments on th* doc trines ot Nullification, and on the policy ot the Tariff luws. As the notices pur ported, it was a meeting without distinc tion ot party, for it appeared to us that almost onr entire population was present. I he large room in which the courts nre held, the lobbies and gallery, were crow ded to overflowing. The speech of Mr. L raw ford was a model of spirit-stirring eloquence, and wps listened to with the most intense interest. It sustained the Resolutions in detail, nnd exposed in the happiest manner, the injustice of a pro tecting tariff-—awarded due credit to the majority ot the late Congress, for the re lief afforded to the South by the act to re duce the duties on imports, am! exposed with the most forcible arguments, and denounced with becoming severity, the impolicy, the danger, and the absurdity of Nullification.
